Elise values... where are they headed?
I've noticed some pretty enticing deals the past couple months on some of the '05 and '06 Elises.... dipping as far as the mid 20s to high 20s.
What do you think the projection is for the value of this car over the next couple of years?

5 year projects made at launch indicated a 53-55% retention of value. These estimates were dead on. Discussion have touched on this numerous times over the past few years but a good guess is prices for GOOD EXAMPLES will probably fall and then settle into the high teens within the next 5 years. Rats will be less. Don't expect to buy a good car for $9,000 anytime soon.

53% on my first Elise means a selling price of $22,500 today, so yeah, mid to high 20s is pretty high (good).

I bought my 05 Elise for 25K and some change almost a year ago now. I think that there is a chance that they will slip as far as 18 - 20k. But over time hopefully they will hold out and slowly become more valuable. Maybe my sons will see that day?

One thing about the Elise/Exige is that there are only so many to go around. They also seem to be slowly getting into the hands of people who plan on keeping them for awhile.
So as long as there is some demand I can't imagine they will slip below the high teens (once they get there) for a long time, unless the car has been in an accident or has very high miles. The only thing that might take a big bite out of the Elise/Exige price is if/when the true next generation comes out. Right now a 2005 looks pretty much the same as a 2009. It all depends on how much better (and better looking) the next gen is I guess. You still see 2005s going for low to high 20s. Which is pretty good. |

An exceptional quality Elise/Exige will see a floor of $20k. These cars will always be desirable and excellent quality examples will become increasingly rare as time goes on. I like to use the 91 to 94 MR2 Turbo as a comparison. Mint examples of those are very desirable and do not depreciate.

All car prices are going down. Name one car made in a quantity of more than 1,000 per year, made 4 years ago, that will be worth more than 50% of its original sales price in 3 years (by 2012). For instance, will an Elise which originally sold for $45,000 in 2005 be worth more than $22,500 in 2012? I believe values for average conditioned Elise's will be worth somewhere in the $15,000 range, with extraordinary examples selling in the $20,000+ range. The Elise is a groundbreaking car, a game-changer that will always have a place in automotive history, and as such long-term (10+ years) resale values should fair better. In addition, the Elise will also be sought-after as a great candidate for electric conversion, when that becomes more commonplace and viable, especially as gas approaches $10.00 per gallon.

I got my 20k mile '05 recently (originally sold in '06) for $24.5 with Starshield, Touring Pack, dealer serviced, and no accidents. Still under warranty (barely) now.

Just so many made in the first place. And probably 500 of those destroyed as rental cars...

Depends
On trade in, your car would be worth less than a bone stock car to a typical dealer. Why? Because all the work you've put into your car would signal , um, active use by the previous owner to a prospective buyer. Also, since there is no way to determine the quality of the install, the dealer may get nervous because he's on the hook by law for the car for at least a few months. A private sale will yield higher numbers but you have to market the car and deal with the tire kickers. My guess is that trade in you'll likely be offered in the mid $20k range. Someone might step up into the higher $20s. Retailing it yourself should get you in the mid $30s because you'll be able to target "people in the know" who understand what you've done. Retail value on an unaltered 06 would be in the low to maybe mid $30k range at a dealer. Interestingly, a 06 Lotus Sport Elise will easily fetch $40-42k on the open market and is, outside of the SC, very close in spec to your car. Robert Quote:
