Finally finished the mod I've been dreaming about.

The day I bought my Lotus, I took the top off and got about two blocks from the Beverly Hills dealership before I thought: "Damn, I wish this thing had a mesh top."

For a long time I made sure I had a spare hat behind my seat as well as a bottle of sunscreen. Neither solution was ideal to me, so I returned to my original thought of a mesh top. It would let the airflow and provide shade at the same time. The best of both top on / top off in my opinion. I guess I'm going to have to do it myself. Fine, that's cool. Behold.

It blocks 75% of the light and still allows a nice flow of air. Because it uses the same ribs the soft top uses, it maintains that shape we've all come to know and love. By now you're wondering how much it weighs. Exactly 4 pounds.

I made this myself, by hand and from scratch. It was kind of a pain in the a$$, but so worth it.

I've been testing it out for a few weeks and I haven't found a good reason to take it off. The tension allows it to handle freeway conditions just fine. If you think you might be interested in one of these, let me know because I am trying to gauge interest.

Wowser... that's nifty!

Interest would be an understatement for the situation here in AZ. Any additional images?

If I ever decide to take off my hard top, this would be ideal for many situations out here.

Interested - my wife doesn't like to get tan so it would be a great compromise.

take and post a bunch of pictures of the top so everyone can see it up close. This is one of those cool ideas that nobody really thinks of until they actually see it but it looks like it could be quite popular.

I love the way it matches the GG. What kind of material? is it really the same color or just the way it looks in the pic?

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. Would be cool if you could use color-matching mesh.

Q & A

Wow, I'm glad you all think it's a good idea. I have some questions to answer.

-There is a storage bag for this and it is factored into the total weight of 4 pounds. haha

-I would estimate a cost between $300 and $400 each.

-The color I used is called Charcoal and goes great with Graphite, but if you ask me, it looks black.

-I could do a custom color to match your car, but it would cost a bit more. The colors available to me are "Charcoal", "Silver Gray", and "Bronze." Bronze would be as close to cedar as you might want to get M.

-The mesh is vinyl coated fiberglass and is super strong.

Here's some more pics:

It does look a wee bit rough around the edges.

My fiance' forced me to get it trademarked and patented. I like to be done with a project when I finish with it, but she wouldn't let me.

It's hard to argue with that except to say that most of the edges don't show and as I get better at making them, they will get cleaner and cleaner.
