Got baited into a race. Argh....

Once again some @sshole in a BMW SUV tailgating me (going up hill I glanced up at my rear view mirror and saw the BMW grill in my rear window). Anyway, I was a bit annoyed and with a clear bridge ahead, I took off expecting to lose the much heavier SUV, and after about 4 seconds I realize I hadn't lose him an inch. He was still on my tail and I immediately backed off.. He changed lanes and blew past me so quickly I'm not even sure what model it was but definitely not an SUV. All I know was it was a BMW sedan with some serious power, even though it was practically silent. I really had no intention to race anyone because I really thought I'd just easily lose this heavy SUV.. But nope it turned out I was baited into a race and once that point set in, I felt so stupid. But I'm sure he felt all high and mighty passing me up but hey whatever I'm seriously glad I backed off and just relieved no cop witnessed what would have surely been deemed street racing. Would have gotten into some serious trouble not to mention getting the car impounded. < me

While nothing happened I am still kicking myself for getting baited like that. My lesson for the day... Don't get cocky, or you might find yourself the big sucker. @sshole drivers abound in SoCal. Fighting it will only get you in trouble. This was a good reminder to just stay chill and relax, regardless of what car it is that is humping your rear.

Anyway... Any of you get suckered like this? Also what BMW was that?? It had a big front end so I had mistakened it for an SUV when it was behind me. When he passed me it was a blur, like he went into hyperspace.

Look some thing like this: BMW X6 M - Model Overview - BMW North America

It only has 555hp and a turbo V8. You must not know how to drive.

@Pray @Allan... I had stated it definitely was not an SUV. I mistakened it because we were getting on a bridge so when I looked up I just saw his grill in my rear view and naturally thought it was a big car.

Looking at the BMW site, I'm pretty sure it was an M6... big front end, just like that. Wondering if it is stock or souped up.

I've seen a couple of great bumper stickers...
"If you're gona be riding my @$$, you better be pulling my hair!"
and...
"Watch out for the idiot driver behind me."

The new BMW 860 has a V12 in it and so did the 750iL... Either could have easily done that.

The 335I models are quite quick too, especially if they have the JP4 chip and a couple of goodies. I have ridden in a buddy's 335i with those mods, above 60 it is a rocket.

I was speeding up in the left lane to overtake a slower BMW Z4 in the right lane, the guy looks over and quickly downshifts. I'm still in 5th and maintain speed, get over and he puts on the flashers. Not sure why but I was so angry that he thought he won.

lol sadly the Camry V6 is no match for the BMW TT V8. Glad you didn't lose anything except a little pride.

I would agree with the (weird-looking, imo) X6M guess. Ride height sort of in the SUV range, and with the four doors sedan feature.
It has plenty of HP; though too bad you didn't go around a corner or off ramp

REV400 might have kept up. REV400 w/ Nikasil block, Clayton head, pistons, small pulley, 9300 RPM redline - lightened to 1800 pounds...would have eaten their lunch. And dinner.

Yes you need a supercharger (Jim Clayton head a bonus) and that shouldn't happen any more. I've done a couple of mountain runs with some local car clubs in my (almost 3 months) of ownership and I was surprised I was able to keep pace with some of the super cars, even on some of the straights...now that being said I am not sure if they were holding back.

But in the end, it's probably wise not to be baited into street racing, but I know about the pride thing. The other day I was driving with my wife and little dog (Oreo - a Chihuahua) and somebody in a Nissan 350 Z was following me for a bit, then decided to pass me on the right, and of course my reaction was to downshift and rev, but then my wife started freaking out so I had to immediately back down. In hindsight it was completely stupid for me to even consider, but it's almost a reaction. If my wife was not in the car I would have embarrassed that 350 Z.

Werd. I've walked all over M6s. They're everywhere here. I think the noise scares them - or when I look sideways and give them the evil smile while they're sipping they Lattes...
