Gut Sport Wing Installation

Finished the install today. A keen eye will notice something missing I love the wing, but wasn't much for the platform. We fabricated under clam mounting braces...rock steady and looks pretty sweet. Uprights were painted stripe black, and wing Saffron. Of course, there's 6 small holes in the clam, but I don't have a problem with that...they're easily filled if I ever want to dismount.

Looks very nice. I looked at the pictures before reading your comments and thought "that wing sure looks like the Gut but it's not a Gut..." I like it much better. Nicely done.

Oooooo how much LESS does it weigh without the docking platform?

Serious.

The install looks great.
Did you add anything inside the trunk to spread out the load of the wing? Hopefully you won't get any cracks in the clam.

Nice job Dave. Can you increase the height on that wing. I doubt it but wanted to check.

Mark - can't adjust the height. It's maybe a 1/2" lower without the platform.

Tandem - yes, fabed some plates to spread the load. Also used some thin rubber washers to act as a simple damper, and adhesive automotive trim foam between the uprights and clam.

David - saves about 3lbs w/o the platform.

Appreciate all the kind comments.

Looks MUCH better without the platform. The platform ruins the a$$ view of the car IMO.

Good work. Nice attention to detail.

Very sharp looking. Dave can you show us a picture of your mounting solution inside the clam?

I should have said that the wing looks pretty good considering it's "tacky" crap from sector111!!!!! ha!
I'm just kidding of course. I'm sure you've all seen the other thread regarding the removal of a GUT wing.

I'll try to get a pic this weekend...should have taken some along the way, but must have been too anxious Here were my steps:

1) I put the platform on the car; used a grease pencil to mark the 3x3 holes. Remove platform, drilled holes in clam.

2) Cut 2ea 4"x8" pieces of aluminum, and set the platform on them as a hole guide, drilled holes. Then mounted to the underside of the clam with epoxy. Make sure the aluminum is flexible enough to contour to the inside of the clam.

3) Applied 1/4" automotive foam adhesive weather seal to the perimeter of the upright bases. This filled in any small gaps between the clam & uprights, and keeps the water out.

4) You need screws that are about 15mm longer than the supplied, so I bought some M6x1x40mm stainless, along with 30mm washers.

The whole thing didn't take 2 hours.

this mod

I like the wing without the platform. But what of the numerous concerns of clam weakening under the weight of the downforce? If there is potential for this weakness over time/duress, would using the provided base upside down in the boot alleviate that (and if the base doesn't fit like that, something similarly functional)?

Also, what is a typical cost to get the wing painted the same as the car? I am contemplating such a mod. I am also thinking of adding the Esta side skirts and I haven't decided on a front splitter. But would paint all three ST. Any one done similar mod and can provide a paint cost estimate?

You should send your version to the GUT site to show them that it doesn't have to be overly ricey but actually tasteful as you've keenly demonstrated. Well done!
