yello Calipers

I saw at a dealer today several (storm Titanium) silver Ferarris & a Porsche GT with Yellow calipers & they looked Great- really complimented the badges on the rims!

There were several other Ferarris with the same color, but they had red & it did not look nearlly as good side by side.

I am going to go with the same yellow as the badge

I had the calipers painted at a local custom auto/motorcycle paint shop. Cost was $400 for the 4 calipers (+ $100 for pinstriping to the calipers and engine covers). I removed and disassembled the calipers myself, thus reducing cost. They used regular auto paint (custom mixed) with a urethane lacquer/clearcoat. Whole process took about 2-3 days including their prep and drying between coats. Someone posted that Huntingridge can do it in 3 hrs, but I can't imagine that will be sufficient - the lacquer itself needs 24 hrs to dry/cure.

I opted for regular auto paint as opposed to high temp since I will use the car for general road use only, and high temp paint is generally limited in color choice.

Originally I was going with black pinstriping on the calipers but when we did a test, the black color was very muted and tended to look like shadowing of the raised lettering. The silver had a more contrasting effect.

I've also given the calipers a Rejex treatment to try and keep the brake dust off.

Gil - I'll check with the paint shop to see if they have any left - the match is pretty good. Alas, I will not be joining you on Mulholland tomorrow as I have still to finish reassembling everything. Before I had to leave for Vegas earlier this week, I was having a problem with the handbrake mechanism on the left rear caliper. I don't have an exploded diagram of the rear calipers so it's difficult to find out how it all works since it looks like a sealed system. Maybe there is a diagram in the Service Manual, can someone post it if there is ?

As a side note, the paint shop were also painting some parts on a CO Elise. The Elise owner had obtained a Krypton Green hardtop and was having it painted CO. The paint shop were having a really difficult time getting the CO to match the original paint on the car. Said it was one of the most difficult colors he had ever had to work with, however he eventually got a good match

Hey Mark..pick up Photoshop or equivalent to "pop" the PICs a bit more. Here are some 10-15 second efforts.

I have used a caliper specific epoxy paint that you mix together and just brush on. It had absolutely excellent results, The nice thing is you remove nothing more then just the wheels to get the job done. No overspray, no disassembly required. I dries to a thick, resistant, and shiney finish for about 50 bucks. Several years later and it still looks like brand new calipers and always gets noticed from others. Its also very easy to clean as it dries to a very smooth non porous surface.

Great suggestion! An internet search revealed the following:

http://www.autosupermart.com/store/s...ml?id=myJDxM5Z

I'm doing that so I don't have to mess with taking the calipers off. Now I just have to "nerve up" and change out the brake pads to the Porterfields...

another idea

On my last car, a twin turbo Mazda RX-7 that saw regular autocross and track use, I used another method to paint the calipers that cost me about $10 and lasted the better part of four years.

Testor's model paint - the same stuff you used as a kid - actually holds up very well even to high heat applications like brakes. I did my calipers in black with white "MAZDA" lettering, and I only touched them up once in all those years. Despite being brushed on, they looked great! Very easy to do even with the calipers on the car, the painting itself just takes a little longer that way.

Related to the Testors suggestion - even better than brushing it on is to use one of the Testors paint pens. They have normal Testors paint, which does work great for this application, but in a pen type marker with a nice firm brush tip. You can get excellent detail and nicely cover all of the cracks and crevices.

The Epoxy paint is the best solution. It is very thick and fills in all the pores and imperfections of the surface to make a very nice finish even though you are brushing it on rough metal. The epoxy mix also produces a hard shiny shell that is very resistant to greese and chipping. I highly doubt that modelers paint will share that durability and resistance.

Any shots of the calipers/car from more of a distance?

Is that laser blue? Looks like it to me.

Okay I finished my caliper paint on Wednesday. I would have to say it was an easy project. I removed the front calipers but I was a little nervous about the rears and left them on. The first thing I did was to remove the front calipers and pads. this was very simple and only took a couple of minutes. I then taped everything off. I could have done a better job of taping off but I still think it turned out good. If you like the brembo writing on your rear pads do not let the included brake cleaner contact the letters. I also left a thumb print on one of my calipers for security purposes .
