Name of the cover that opens on the rear of the Elise

I posted a smart a$$ comment about the name of the cover over the engine:

So... What is it. I can't be the hood because that's that thing you put over the cockpit to keep the rain out. But what is the proper name?

There you guys go being all serious. I was expecting humorous responses, not serious thinking. Didn't I include enough smilies?

Don't forget the sheep:

Bonnet for me should always be at the front of the car, not necessarily covering where the engine is.

Lotus also refers to it as:

"engine cover / boot lid"

And:

"engine cover"

For the Exige it is called a "tailgate panel".

As an ex-sailor, I call it the engine-room hatch.

BTW, MitchT, spanners aren't usually adjustable, and when they are, they're often called wrenches.

I call it the "bald spot cover-upper" because that's where it is usually resting.

Bonnoot sounds Canadian.

How about calling it a "taint" 'cause 't aint just a bonnet and 't aint just a boot cover.

I try to convince my wife that that's what's causing the bald spot. She isn't buying it...

I use hatch or deck lid. It's actually where you put the kids.

No!!! That's American for boot.

Next thing you know, you'll be looking for a new tire instead of a tyre. And you'll talk about left and right side instead of the kerb side and near side. Not to mention fender instead of wing. That kind of talk belongs in the Loo...

Its pretty easy to get it right guys and girls. The bonnet is always at the front and the boot is always at the back. No matter where the engine is. Hence old VW beetles had "an engine in the boot".

I'm from the other side of the pond so I must know what I'm talking about

Noticed Jezza or Tiff or one of them opening the hatch on something Italian and referring to it as the boot - works for me.
