R&T article

Just got the R&T March issue and the Sports Car Shootout article. Confirms what I expect. I WANT THE ELISE!!!

Forget about the R&T actual final ranking. Going through their factors, the Elise won in the factors I liked most. In performance, it was second only to the 997S!!! It beat out the Viper SRT-10, the Corvette C6, the Boxster S, the SLK 350 (too bad they did not try the AMG equivalent). The Elise sucked at the subjective ratings like engine (R&T loves big engines), styling (it's in the eye of the beholder), seats (it comes with seats?), luggage (huh??), ride (you don't ride the thing, you DRIVE it). But, that's why they are subjective. They care, I dont!

Total Performance second only to the 997S by a hair. Glad I have one coming.

They should add a rating for "fun to drive" then it would have won!!!

Thanks for the update

They actually had one, "driving excitement", a subjective category. They picked the Viper tops for that one. Maybe they defined driver excitement as "scared witless".

Maybe wearing the tires out in a straight line is more exciting than wearing them out in the corners?!

What was up with the Elise's braking distance? It was about 20 feet longer this time. Didn't it get 105 ft, a record, during R&T's test drive? At least the car was faster this time (4.6 & 12.4 vs. 4.7 & 13.1)! It pulled more Gs this time, too (1.03 vs 0.99)! How the hell did the Elise lose to the Boxster in the slalom??? Not only that, the Boxster beat the Enzo??? Some of these numbers are funny... If it weren't for those, the Elise would have been 3rd, Boxster 4th. Being 4th is not bad either considering "all around" they must have liked the car so much to not fault the Elise much on it's comfort, space, storage, etc.

I'm guessing the M3 wasn't included because 2005 is the last year. What about the STi and EVO MR?

You could argue they aren't sport cars.

Do you guys buy the mag off the rack? It sucks to have a subscription and wait two weeks before I can read what everyone's talking about.

Got mine from the grocery store. Costs a lot less to subscribe, so I guess they sell to the non-subscribers and bulk buyers first. I don't subscribe since I don't as a general rule like R&T.

Yeah, I wish they had the Evo, WRX in there. But, not sport's cars I guess but performance coupes. The only coupe they had in there was the 997S.

Part of the reason for the Elise's losing out to the Boxster S on the slalom is the improved suspension on the Boxster S. The Federal Elise also has changed. There was a video of a UK car show where the host, an experienced driver, kept making the Elise plow. He had a guest, a Lotus engineer, who then proceeded to show him how it should be done. Betcha if that same engineer was on the R&T test the Elise would have beat the whole field.

FYI, the show was Top Gear, the host was Tiff Nedell (sp?), the Lotus test driver/engineer is Gavin Kershaw. He's amazing...

The host was Jeremy Clarkson of course. Tiff needs no instruction!

Oops my bad, thanks for the correction J - I got Tiff (of Fifth Gear) mixed up with Mr. Clarkson. How embarassing...

No problem Mike, Tiff used to be on Top Gear a while ago, so he is generally associated with both shows.
