S.Ohio Ferrari / Lotus run today with Russian MIG21 and MIG17 jets

This was not your average car cruise-in today. Three Lotuses were invited to drive with the Ohio Ferrari Chapter to Roberts Aviation at the Hamilton, Ohio airport. We met at 3:00 in West Chester, OH and drove a hilly, winding route mapped by Mr. Ian Roberts, our host, about 45 miles to the Roberts hanger where a surprise awaited us. It was raining lightly so the turnout was not great - many of the Ferraris stayed home, especially the spiders. But we had a GT40, a Ford GT, Noble M400, Lamborghini Diablo SV (very rare car!), Lambo Gallardo, one Lotus Esprit, two Lotus Elises, One Lotus Exige-S, and several Ferraris, of course, since it was their show LOL. We got to the Roberts Aviation hanger and they had moved some corporate jets outside so we could park in the hanger. The place was immaculate. Mr. Ian Roberts had a wonderful dinner spread catered in. Many of us had our wives along who must have thought this was how all drives went LOL. Inside our hanger was a Russian MIG 17 and some other plane. Outside was a Russian MIG 21. Both were fully operational "toys" of Roberts Aviation. I was told the MIG 21 on full afterburner burns all its fuel (three or more fuel tanks) in 45 minutes at over $5/gallon Here's a few photos. We're looking for more Cincinnati/N.KY Elise owners for drives. Contact me at cerven@fuse.net if you're interested.

Just in case you need your plane worked on in the Cincinnati area, here's who to call:

Ian Roberts
Roberts Aviation
2808 Bobmeyer Road
Hamilton, OH 45011
24 hr. 765-220-1596
Office 513-898-9259
robertsaviation@fuse.net

Some information I just got in an Email from Ian Roberts on the planes in the photos:

"I never described everything in detail but the aircraft outside was a MiG 21MF formerly Slovak military. It was shipped in pieces and assembled by us for its owner Gregory shepard of Ft Myers Fl. It will be leaving soon as we now have it certified by the FAA. The aircraft can cover mother earth at over twice the speed of sound
The MiG 17 is getting some repairs done and it too will leave for Florida. the same fellow owns both.

The aircraft that was on jacks is a King Air B100. It is one of many that we maintain. Our primary business consists of corporate jet and turboprop maintenance. We are currently the primary maintenance provider for many of the Cincy and Kentucky corporate aircraft owners. Our customer base extends all over the USA east of Chorpus Christi TX. So far, our customer from Chorpus Christi (Driscoll Childrens Medical center) is the furthest travelling regular client we have. They use there aircraft to transport doctors to there facility.

AND...We have been known to work on exotic cars I think you noticed that....

thought you'd like all this info in case anybody on the Forum asks..."

I just got anouther Email from Ian Roberts with some information on the MIG 21. I'll copy what he said and his videos. One vid is of the first Engine run they did in Hamilton, OH that must have scared the crap out of the neighbors

And the other video is a nice long "Living with your MIG" one showing inside the cockpit (I have noticed some things I recognised like turn signals, an applause meter and more!) and the MIG 21MF (I can guess what the MF stands for LOL. Here's the info from Ian Roberts. Feel free to contact him directly folks robertsaviation@fuse.net

By the way here is the video of the first engine run we did. It made it to google, don't ask me how ...........
Now, we were working all day to get things sorted out and finally at dusk everything was right. Our biggest problem was braking force. We kept having to adjust the pressure regulator so that the aircraft would hold with full power applied. It wasn't planned this way but our first run was near dark and boy did the folks at the trailer park get ticked....It was so loud it made an F-16 sound quiet!

To answer the question on the parts and so forth, I have translated manuals and a Bulgarian (Now US citizen) that assists on translations that stump us. Parts can be difficult but they are available. The MiG 21 was one of the most produced aircraft in the world so parts are out there. Just costs alot to call and search
There are some 20+ Mig 21's licensed and flying in the US.
Wild machine to own considering $3000.00/hr for fuel

Take care
Ian

Here is a good video of the cockpit, in case you are interested.....This is identical to the airplane at the hangar.

Looks like a great day was had by all. I'm a bit of a GT40 nut, got any more along those lines? I had the pleasure of watching a race prepped GT40 lapping years ago.
