s240 totaled. Should I sell it?

Last week my '08 s240 was rear-ended at about 35 mph. It was pushed into the car in front of me. Today the insurance company totaled the car. Only had it since June.

My adjuster asked me if I wanted to buy the car. My first thought was, "No, of course not." But then I thought about the threads here where people buy totaled Elises and Exiges.

Do I want to buy back my s240 and sell it to someone here on LotusTalk? 2008 Exige S 240. Solar yellow. Track pack. Touring pack. Starshield. No LSD. Bought new in June.

I know the obvious answer is: It depends. Depends on the damage, what the insurance company is offering to sell it for, etc.

I won't know til maybe next week what the insurance company would offer to sell it back to me for.

The rear is damaged, the floor of the boot is pushed up, the front is damaged, the passenger door opens just a few inches, and the damage appraiser said there was frame damage. That was the final nail for totaling it. Two pics attached.

At any rate, is this something more trouble than it's worth? Or can I profit a bit to pay for a day of driving school at the track?

Thanks,
Dan

I'd want to buy it back unless they want a ridiculous amount of money for it. Especially if you're going to replace it with another one.

That's exactly what the driver said! Fortunately, the driver was honest and well insured and ended up being cited by the police.

It's probably best just to let it go to the insurance company and maybe find out in a few months here on LotusTalk who ended up with it.

At least ask how much they want for it.

There are probably 50 people here that would want the drivetrain out of that car.

I'm really interested in the suspension and would call first dibs on it if you were to buy it back and part it out.

Where are you located?

Sorry about your loss by the way...

Sorry to hear about your car; glad you were not injured. You should part it out as carpet buttons, sunvisors, and rear view mirrors are in high demand.

An s260, of course. I loved that s240. It was really hard to hear and feel it get wrecked.

I hadn't considered parting it out. I guess it all depends on what they'll sell it for. We'll see what they say.

I would not bother. Even parting it out will likely not yield you what they are gonna sell it for, and who wants the head ache? Be done with it and go buy a new car!!!

Part it out....

Have fun with it and part it out.
The insurance co will ask for around 10% of the value. Maybe a tad more.
So, you can buy this back for not a whole lot.
I bet you can easily double your money.

Yes, you want to buy it back!!!!

To give an example:

A month ago my wife was going down the freeway at 75MPH in her MR2 Spyder and a utility truck changed lanes into her. She saw it coming, and sped up, so he clipped the cars back end and chucked her into the guard rail.

Not a front or rear body panel on the car survived. So far I managed to part it out for over $7000 and have about $1500 worth of parts still to go!

Not bad for a car that doesn't bluebook for much.

(on a side note, we bought her a 2005 S2000 but it just wasn't enough like the spyder, so we bought a Blackwatch Racing supercharged 2006 Exige last monday!)
