Talking Tilting Clam in the Worx

Update: 8/19/08

Summary:

The kit is now on 14 different cars and functioning well.

Elise: Reports have been the installation is pretty straight forward with no issues to speak of. Tilt time is 3-5 minutes.

Exige: Requires quite a bit of additional work including designing your own solution for the lid latch, side scoops, and IC intake for the S models. Tilt time is 10-20 minutes.

Modification required to the body: Drill four holes in the floor of the boot. Nothing else of any consequence, so it's completely reversible...

Pics of cars (not mine) with tilt from within this thread:

Other items worth mentioning: The kit has everything you need to install and get the clam tilting, locked down, and relocate the battery. That said, there are so many different opinions about how to route tail light wires, alarm, third brake light with quick connects and wire extentions, etc, that you have the freedom to determine those customized solutions on your own. If you chose not to get too fancy, then the kit has everything you need along with the instructions needed to have the kit fully functional with no additional purchase.

Installation takes about a day. Instructions are complete with color pictures.

For more information, please cruise this thread and/or PM me...

Best,

Phil

Old beginning of Thread:Just a teaser for now... Woke up this morning at the crack of dawn excited to start the tilting clam project... 2 hour later, the rear clam is off... SUPER easy job with a 1/4" impact driver That little tool makes short work out of just about anything. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to pull the clam off myself. I found out that one person can easily pull the clam off

I'll post pics of the hinges and fastening system as I get them built.

A couple notes: The system I'm designing will still have the boot lid functional, it will require about 5 minutes to get the clam ready to tilt up. A couple pins, 2 Allen head screws and 6 thumb bolts to remove. All accessible without dismantling anything...

The battery is being relocated to above the driver's side wheel. I thought about relocating to passenger side above wheel, but that's where the IC will sit before too long

Have a nice day!

Phil

Speaking of which, is there any post that show how to take off the rear clam?

I always wondered why the battery wasn't up front in the first place. Seems to balance the car better and add trunk space.

Perhaps it was a safety/crash worthiness issue.

Good luck with the mod, I can't wait to see it at our next meeting.

Think he means over the driver's side rear.

Phil,

How much will the hinges, screws, pins, bolts, all weigh? I hope it'll all be aluminum!

Just thought I'd prepare you for the inevitable questions.

Sounds like something I'd like to add. Nice thinking!

Is it totally necessary to move the battery? Maybe an anderson plug to disconnect it before the tilt, or extended cables. Just wondering.

I'll try to answer a couple questions, as I don't have much time to write...

-It's not absolutely necessary to move the battery, but it makes it better if you do... Cable length is just part of. Under the battery lies a great attachment point for the clam...

-Weight: It will be very light...

-We will "kit" this and make it available for sale. The final unit, like all our projects will be laser or water jet cut, p-coated, with high quality hardware...

-I'm quite certain that this will not work unless you have eliminated your rear panel. If you're wondering why, then just check out how many fasteners attach your rear panel to the clam Don't go out and buy a rear panel elim kit to prepare though, as it will take a special unit to work with the flip-top lid...

-Will work with any exhaust as far as I can tell... but no guarantees...

- It will be pretty expensive. There's a lot to this kit, special fasteners, complicated hinge system (4 bar hinge), battery relocation, etc...

A couple things that I found about the Hypersport hinged clam. It doesn't hinge unless the wheels are off the car! It's super easy to make a hinge that works with the wheels off. If you look at any pic you see with their red elise at the track, they always remove the clam to work on it, not flip the lid. THe only pic where you can see their clam in action and tilting, there are no wheels on the car... There's nothing easy about making a hinge that is BOTH out of sight while the clam is the normal driving position and allow the clam to tilt with the wheels on the car... Finally, after the hinge work is done, there's the issue of attaching the clam back to the car well enough that you don't have anymore body flex than you had before...Also not easy...doable, but not easy...

I need to run. I'll try to get pics up when I can...

Best,

Phil

As often as these cars need to be jumped, are you planning to have some type of connectors that will be under a front access panel?
