If you have a chance, could you think about a second kit, one that keeps the rear panel attached to the clam? It could be your non-tilt version. (Is it possible)?

It would be no big deal to remove the wheels before lifting the claim off the car. That way the battery wouldn't even have to move.

Just wanted to retain the stock appearing look.

Our main priority right now is the hinged clam with wheels on the car... However, if we could iron out a quick release rear clam that looked stock externally (i.e. maintained rear panel), would you find that attractive? It wouldn't be hinged... By quick release, you would still have to unbolt the diffuser from the rear panel... I can see this solution making removing the rear clam a 20 minute job....

Best,

Phil

Definteily interested in this, cause it retains the stock look. 20 min is a lot better than 2 hours to take the clam off.

You mean it takes longer than 20 min. to remove the rear clam???

Where you working on this when Neil called today? He said it sounded like you were. I can't wait to see some pics. Keep up the good work!!!

You're correct about the hinged clam and rear wheels. My hinge is "L" shaped to lower the pivot point. The hinge is slightly visible from the rear. Will you require top removal to tilt the clam?

Good Luck Phil, this will be a fun project,

John

Well I can do it in 20 minutes, but I keep reading about others that take several hours. I'm just trying to help them out

Ya, I was right in the middle it when Neil called... His car has got to be just silly fast...

Back to regular programming...

Best,

Phil

Hi John,

In an effort to keep it simple, we built a hinge with a similar mounting point to yours yesterday...and about 3 others with single pivots The problem is they all require removing the top piece or dremeling on it to clear the rollbar bits with a simple hingle like that. I liked it, and it accomplishes the task, but just wasn't quite right yet... I want to the unit to be *just right* and I really want the hinge to be out of sight...

So we then built a 4 bar hinge It first lifts the clam up several inches, then it rotates back and finally tilts the clam... If anyone has ever seen the hood hinge on circa 70's chevy truck, you'll know what I'm talking about. A lot of new cars use a hinge like this on the trunk lid too...pretty slick really...

So that's where we are. There's still a lot more to do like the custom release points, battery tray, etc...

Best,

Phil

Awesome Phil. Not having to remove the rollbar hoop cover would be very cool.

It's ALIVE!

Time for some pics!

It's official. The hinges are now done... although actual pics of the hinge are still a secret for the time being The following image will give you an idea of how a 4 bar hinge works...

The clam hinge works simply awesome! With the roll bar cover on, the wheels on the car, and no visable hardware when the clam is down

The clam first moves up about 3 inches, then moves back a ways and finally tilts at the end. It's final resting point is behind and above the exhaust. No sliding hinges or odd parts to give way to age...Just a well thought out hinge with the right ratios...

Stay tuned for more pics later this week...

Best,

Phil

That's so freakin awesome. Even if I have to unscrew the diffuser, this would be such an asset to have on the car.

I can't say for sure... but I jsut don't see how it could. There's just sooooooooooo many bolts holding the rear panel on the car. If you remove just a few of them, the thing will be a buzz box... That said, the clam isn't altered in anyway, so if you wanted to run the panel, you would just have to make the effort to take the thing off before the clam could tilt... It's the price you would have to pay to keep the panel...

I'm not sure if this is possible but the tilting clam may be coolest part of the car

Best,

Phil
