What is this?

Wondering what this part is. Passenger-side of the engine compartment, zip-tied to the roll-bar support.

It's an air filter with a check valve... it's supposed to allow outside air into the charcoal canister while the engine is running to purge fuel vapors back to the intake manifold. It should be connected to the charcoal canister at the port under the valve... I believe the port that's visible is the fresh air port

Beat me to it.

And... it closes (ECU controlled) to seal the system to allow the ECU to run a test to check the system for leaks. In the diagram above, the vapor management valve is the valve responsible for allowing the vapors in the canister into the intake track while the canister close valve allows atmospheric venting (both ways - to allow fresh air to purge the canister and scrubbed air to vent to atmosphere).

I *think* manufacturers now have to route the atmospheric portion back to the airbox and that's why we're starting to see HC screens in airboxes on the latest new cars.

The bottom end is plugged in. I was just making sure the exposed end (in the picture) wasn't supposed to be connected somewhere.

It's not. The port that's shown is the fresh air vent. The port that goes to the charcoal canister is out of view...

too slow...

When gas is going into the tank, should this valve allow air to flow out?
