(I'm not an Elise owner - yet)

With that said, based on what I've read in these threads, I wonder why SO MANY people make rude and angry remarks towards Lotus's.

Most often is the small size of the car....then it seems to be snide "kit car" comments, or the ignorant "should have bought a vette", "always breaking down", etc... etc...

More often than not I believe its pure jealously. The fact that an Elise driver owns a NICE summer toy that these idiots couldn't even imagine affording so it makes them feel better about themselves by saying something totally asinine.

What are the best comebacks you've used when someone mentions the small size - matchbox, toy, etc... comments?

I started at a new job a few weeks ago and have been driving my 13 year old Miata to work. Yesterday I had to take the Elise to the shop after work so I drove it. Within 30 minutes of getting here I got a mass email from the receptionist in our company.

"Will the person that owns the red Lotus please email or call me" So I emailed her to see what's wrong and get a reply back of "Nothing I just wanted to make sure it was actually an employee that owned it since it was in one of our parking spots". 5 minutes later I start hearing other employees walk up to each other and make snide remarks such as "Hey XXX go move your Lotus I heard it's parked illegally".

Then I hear a guy across the hall from me say, "that thing is a death trap, I bet it disintigrates in a crash, oh well I'd have to take out a 2nd mortage to afford one anyways". The general public cracks me up.

Went to grab some teriyaki for lunch with my girlfriend and a guy that goes into her work (tanning salon) was sitting behind us with his girlfriend. Anyways

I hear over my shoulder

Girl: Uh What kinda car is that
Guy: Thats a Lotus. Its not my style but its nice and pretty rare.
Girl: Eww just look at it. I don't like it at all.

I don't think they knew it was my car but I didn't say anything because everyone is entitled to their own opinion but then she got up and they walked to her car. A prelude with a "Type R" hood emblem, some cheap wheels, and alteezas. Oh yeah it also had a larger muffler than my turbo'd car did. The guy at least had the respect to wait out in the parking lot and not attempt to open the door and ding up the elise.

Where an I rent an Elise in / near St. Louis?
I've been looking at this car for a looong time. I was able to do a limited test drive at night not too long ago and was underimpressed but I believe that was because of the limited roads and time available.
I really need to have this car for a day to see if I could get used to the low power in low rpms and crazy power in high rpms all the time.
Anyone know where I can rent one in St. Louis Missouri or anywhere close?

There is a whole (and really long) thread on the "cute" comment and a bunch of people's responses for when people comment on your car being cute or small (most of the comebacks apply to your question too for comments on size, quality, etc.). Some are serious (power/weight responses) and some are just hilarious. Just search and I am sure you'll find it...

Didn't John Denver and JFK Jr graduate from that school? I think Payne Stewart was an associate professor.

.... Join in on the bag session (if they don't know that you are the owner) and then at the end add in, "so what do you do drive again?" then walk over to your Lotus and drive away laughing.

If they know it's yours you could also say you prefer your cars like your women: "lightweight, fast, low maintenance, and easy on the eyes" and then ask what they're driving. When the respond with their almost always heavier car/minivan/suv, ask "man don't you wish there was a Jenny Craig program for cars?". Walk away/drive away laughing.

I got a pretty funny comment from a rider last weekend...

I drove the Elise up to a friend's house to work on my 944 (he's got a lift and every tool imaginable). After a while, one of his daughters (maybe 13?) comes over and says, "One of my friends REALLY loves your car and wants a ride." I said, "Ok. No problem." After making sure it was ok with the parents, I took her out about 2 miles and back. Coming out of the neighborhood is a really nice twisty section that also has great visibility, so I ramped it up a bit for fun. After about the 3rd corner she said, "Oh wow!! It's like being inside 'Need for Speed Underground'!!" Then she told me she always picks the Lotus when she plays any driving video game.

OK

went to "pepboys" yesterday looking for a panel popper, took the S since its been in the garage for a week, so i thought it be nice to cruise it

immediately after getting out of my car, a male construction worker walked up right behind me and said, "your not gonna find anything here for that car...its italian!"
didnt want to be a dick so i just played right along replying "uh huh, its not for that car" he then went on about how he lived in italy a few years, rented a ferrari, blah blah blah

i guess to some LOTUS is Italian made, given my car is red LOL

I thought I'd take advantage of the 80 degree weather and wash the Elise after work today. I turn the key to start the car and hear click, click, click. I haven't drien the Elise in a few days, and I had left the Valentine 1 on and killed the battery. I figured I'd go ahead and push the car out of the garage, wash it, and then put it on the charger. After washing and drying the car the car, I ran a drop cord out of the garage and hooked up the charger.

Then some idiot neighbor comes walking down the cart path next to the house and says, "You think you're saving on gas, but wait until you get your power bill." Dumbfounded by this, I ask what he means. He thought the car was some kind of plug in hybrid/ electric car (Tesla??) because of the drop cord running to the back and I had the sucker hooked up to the house power charging the battery.
