"Nice car" is a very frequent comment.

"Thank you" seems appropriate at first but on further reflection, he's not complimenting me. He's complimenting the car. You might say that he's complimenting my taste but probably not.

Sometimes I see this comment as an opportunity to educate the complimentor. He's commenting on appearance, whereas we all know that the Lotus appeal is performance. I had that conversation just this afternoon with a security guard.

9 months of Lotus driving and already I'm jaded!

I usually just say, "I agree" or "I think so too".

And if they say "I love your car", I generally respond with "Me too!"

I was playing tennis with my girlfriend yesterday at a local park court. About 6 kids stopped to take pictures of my Elise and then one girl drove bye and yelled "is that your car!?" I said yes then the guy playing on the court next to me said I always get that type of attention with my car as he pointed to his ford festiva. He was amazed how much attention the Elise got.

I was just inside a Starbucks on the way to work for my occasional morning mocha. (I've only been at this contract for about two weeks so the car's all new to the locals in this area of the city)...

Anyway when I walked out there was a guy with a BIG F350 parked next to me talking on his cell phone "Hey Bill there's one of those Lotus Elises you've been talking about right next to me about to leave. Wish you were here!"...

So I asked him where his friend was and discovered he worked at an insurance agency in a strip mall further down the road on the way to work... so I told him what the hell - I'll drive through the parking lot ala drive-by... just for him

A couple of minutes later I drove into the strip mall parking lot and there was the ENTIRE population of the company (about 10 people) standing outside waving and cheering as I drove up - it was surreal.

I stopped and talked to the guy for a couple of minutes - he was the boss after all. Supposedly he has a car-crush on the Elise (like any of us have never had such a thing) but had never seen one in person.

I made his day

That's awesome. I busted out laughing when you said the whole population was standing outside... good story

Thank you is always the correct answer to a compliment, the person is basically telling you they like your style or choice. A car is no different than any other thing you own because you like it's style. If somebody said "nice jacket" or "nice dog" or "nice ring" you would say thank you, if you said "I agree" I think that comes across as kind of arrogant or snide, like you are saying Duh no kidding that is why I bought it fool.

Him: What's it rev at?
Me: You mean redline?
Him: yeah.

Him: Ever ride a bike?
Me: Yeah but not in years.

While at a BBQ last weekend...

Guy: You have a nice car. What kind is it?
Me: A Lotus Elise.
Guy: Ah no wonder why I couldn't figure it out. Well nice car, I won't touch it though because it probably cost more than my house.
Me: (thinking to myself) maybe if he lives in a trailer or a small boat?

Thank you. Manners don't get different rules just because cars are involved.

[quote=njcu;1083593]a crown vic stops at a stop sign looks at me coming down the road then looks at the opposite traffic then looks back at me coming down the road and pulls out of the stop in front of my car.

This is something all of us need to be aware of. Our cars are small, and to many people, they appear to be farther away than they really are. It's all the proportions. Always be careful of people pulling out in front of me.

I hope that all the bikers on here are in the other 10%, cause I'm one of them :P

That'd be like us saying 90% of car guys that don't (can't) ride bikes talk sh*t because they're really just scared little girls and need the extra two (training) wheels for balance

Wow so you're saying we're not part of the other 10% and that we value our lives less than you value yours?

Must be rough living life with your dick in a jar.

I can only imagine what all the bikers are going to have to say about your comments maybe I'll start a thread and find out.

Then again, I just think you're saying that to make yourself feel better since you can't ride so I'll cut you some slack and consider you self-handicapped.

Last night, at a local gathering of cars, mostly BMWs. It started out that way but evolved into something big. Now cars of all types come in to hang out and chit chat. Although the majority is still kids who are under 20 and drives BMW 335s.

I was standing back from my car talking to a person who is rebuilding his RX-7 and a kid approaches me and the conversation goes like this:

him: nice car
me: thank you
him: do they come with superchargers and turbos?
me: um... actually the newer models are supercharged from the factory. The 08 Elise are s/c'ed and the Exige have been that way since 2007.
him: oh, cool, cause my friend's got one of those.
me: oh yeah? Very nice. (I'm going to guess here that his friend is probably his age... around 17?)
him: yeah, it's got 2 turbos on it.
me: *long pause while I'm searching for nice things to say* ....
him: yeah, it's sick.
me: um... that's ... nice.

At this time, the guy who is building an RX-7 looks at me... and I glance at him, and he saves me by starting another conversation.

After the kid leaves, my other friend who was listening in said... so um... one turbo for each bank of 2 cylinders? We all crack up.

While I'm sure that kid had no idea what he was talking about, and I have never personally heard of anyone with a Elise/Exige with a twin turbo set-up.....it's not totally inconceivable. Heck......I have two cars with twin turbochargers..........and they don't have any cylinders!!
