if you can't drive a car to where you want to go, and park it, i feel you can't afford that car.
that said, i am careful to try to park out of harm's way.
just my 2 cents.

it's a surprise that he actually knew the difference, tho.

Strange thing to say since the V8 Esprit is the oddball "non Lotus philosophy" car in a long heritage of small, light weight, small 4cyl cars ??

All Esprits have Lotus developed engines including the 3.5l twin turbo V8

Some early Lotus models had Ford engines and some later Jaguars have Ford engines but whoever told you that has used limited information "creatively"

Funny - I always considered the Elite, Elan, and Europa to be "real Lotus". The Esprit was a luxury car...

You are talking about Esprits. There were Lotus prior to the Esprit. And all engines used in the Esprit were designed and sourced from/by Lotus.

Depends.

Lots of Lotus race cars had Ford based Cosworth V8 racing engines.

The original Lotus street car had a "fire pump" engine. The engine was a light weight aluminum engine originally intended to power a portable fire pump. It was tweaked over by Cosworth (I I'm remembering it correctly) and used in various race cars and the Elite.

The Elan used the Lotus Twin Cam engine ("Twink". It used an English Ford Kent engine lower end (block, crank, pistons, rods, oil pump and pan). It has a Lotus designed and manufactured Twin Cam cylinder head (replacing the Kent's in-block single cam, push rods and rocker arms and cylinder head). You could say the engine was "Ford based" but even that would be slightly misleading - the engine used specially selected blocks (for strength), stronger cranks and rods, and pistons). The Elan used a Ford transmission and differential gears (the "pumpkin" out of a solid axle and installed in a Lotus designed and manufactured differential carrier - converting it into independent rear suspension).

The Original Europa used a Renault engine and trans. Later Europas (starting in '72) used the Twink engine.

For the Second generation Elite , Lotus designed and manufactured a 4 cylinder engine (it's first use was in the Jensen-Healy). Lotus continued development over the years, installing the engine in Excels, Eclat, and the Esprit. Lotus finally replaced the 4 cylinder with the Lotus designed and manufactured V8.

tim,
---and that's why i never owned a lotus til the 2zz engined one came along.
they were beautiful but out of the range i would consider spending especially with a special and exotic engine.
my DD has a complete powertrain if i need one for the lotus...
ps, i always enjoy your posts, straight and factual.

I believe you are correct.

Mine has the 3.5L Twin turbo set up. It puts out about 350HP and 295 lbs of torque. Mine is stock but with a little tweaking they have been know to generate over 400 to 450 HP. To bad the transmission can not handle the additional HP. The transmission is the basically the same as in the 4cyl. The power with the V8 is more linear that the 4cyl turbo esprit. It just seems to pull more and longer than the 4cyl turbo esprits. I prefer the V8 over the 4cyl... but that is my preference. I like the Elise and Exige also and I'm planning on add one of them soon to my garage.

Actually it's rather common for people to associate Lotus with Ford. Back in the old days of racing (F1, Indy, etc.) it was common to refer to the car and the engine. Since many (most?) of the Lotus Formula cars used the Ford based V8, it was common to hear mention of "Lotus-Ford" - especially since Lotus was winning most of those races.

Then there was the Lotus Cortina - a Ford Cortina that was tweaked over by Lotus and the Kent engine replaced with the Twink...

That's why we still run into people that think Lotus is made by Ford...
