I was grizzling about the $25 fill up at my local Unistop when an elderly lady came up to me and said .."I love your car.... can I look in the window?" She seemed like a well balanced individual ...so I said "Sure .. here, let me open the door for you." She peered inside the car and I could hear her muttering ..."Oh .. that won't work..... " When I asked her what wouldn't work, she said "The rear shelf .... it has no rear shelf ... I need a big shelf for my two dogs...." ......... I was going to suggest a BMW M5 Touring .. but she seemed like a nice lady .. so I just said "Oh .. what a shame .. and you had your heart set on it..."

I was parked in Glendale, California and was coming out of a condo, walking towards my car. Three kids who appeared to be about 10 to 12 years old were standing right next to my car and drooling. One of them was screaming for his mom to come back up the street so she could take a picture of them in front of the Elise. As I walked up, I heard one of them whisper to the others, "I think it's his." I couldn't help but chuckle. So I offered to let them get in the driver's seat and check it out from the inside out. They were extremely excited and took their time getting in and out. The mom thanked me for giving them a chance to sit in the car. I replied that I was just like them when I was a kid. It was a fun experience....

I get lots of the usual stupidity, but this one takes the cake. I was driving sedately in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, and some late-30s yuppie in his Bimmer 3-Series flips me the bird and yells "D*ucheb*g!" I've noticed that the car can make other people more aggressive, but this is the first drive-by shouting I've experienced.

Was over at a friend's house. I let his 16 year old sit in the Elise. He and his buddy are trying hard not to drool. "Hey, Smitty, get a picture of me!" followed by "No one is going to believe this isn't photoshopped."

I made his week.

I had to go to Sam's today to get a tire for my Civic repaired. I hauled the tire there in the Exige. After I got there, two tire center guys came out to get the tire and see the car. One was really nice and liked the car. The other guy said blatantly, with me standing 3 feet away, that he didn't like it at all. And I quote, "I don't like anything less than 6 cylinders" as he motioned over towards his camaro in the parking lot.

I replied with "I don't like any car more than 2000 pounds." He didn't have a good comeback for that one.

So I had a funny experience on the way to work. I pull out and headed to 7-11 in the S2000 this morning before jumping on the freeway. As I pull into the 7-11 a bum is there to greet me.

Bum: Yo man, whats it got on the dash?
Me: Huh?
Bum: Whats it got on the speedo?
Me: *-slight pause to think-* Oh uh…I dunno the speedo is digital.
Bum: It looks like a BMW, but then I noticed the Honda logo *proceeds to walk around the back of the car, dayam, I know this thing is definitely fayast cause its got dem dual exhausts.
Me: Uh huh…*backs away slowly

I could only imagine how bad I would have been accosted if it was the Elise.

Both funny and stupid...

I'm behind a Scion tC, coffee can exhaust, lightly modded, license plate frame says "I know, I know, license and registration" . I few moments later we're along side each other; he yells over: "you want to trade cars?".

"Uhhhhhh, no."

I’ve only owned the Elise long enough to make three payments but I do have a few stories to share.

This one happened just yesterday. I made a run to Carl’s Jr. for some fast food dinner. This is an older Carl’s Jr. with the drive thru window on the passenger’s side of the car. So sometimes an employee will appear from the side door to help out. In the Elise with top off I ordered two burgers, two fries and two drinks.

When I pulled around to the pick up window an employee was already waiting for me outside with only one drink. He tells me how much he likes the Elise and asks a few questions. I hand him some cash and ask about my second drink. Oh, hang on a second was his reply. Runs inside and reappears with my second drink and change.

A minute or so later a girl pops out with my fries (only my fries). Tells me how cool the cars is and then disappears. And then another minute or so a third employee arrives with my burgers. And guess what? She likes my car also. Kinda funny how it took three employees four visits outside to the Elise to complete my order. That episode made my afternoon.

About a month ago as I am cautiously backing out of my garage onto the street I notice someone walking a little further down. As I get situated and shift into first I have a better view of the older gentleman up ahead on my right. Pulling up to the intersection I see he is now stopped in his tracks. Driving through the intersection I see he is now bracing himself against his walking stick. He must have been pushing 75yrs and has a huge smile from ear to ear. While I drive by he just stands there and gives the Elise a strong thumbs up.

Another time as I was leaving my favorite pizza joint I found the Elise surrounded by a pack of about eight little man cubs. They were so close I thought they were scratching the paint or writing on the poor car. Turns out they were taking close up detail pics with their phone cams. Once my nerves settled a little (and with Mom watching) I let them take turns sitting behind the wheel. Seeing how excited they got about sitting in the car made for another rewarding Elise adventure.

Two in one day! I love my Lotus!

Driving behind a black Viper... a Mercedes CLK with 4 women pull up next to me and start hooting, screaming, "hey baby", etc. One says "we really love your car"...

Me: "Which car do you like better... this (pointing to my car) or that (pointing to the Viper).
Girl #1: Oh, definitely yours! It's much hotter!
Girl #2: Yes! It looks like its got a rocket engine!
Girl #3: And anyway, your car's more expensive!

As I said, I love my Lotus; entertainment value is always close at hand!

Getting into my Elise outside of a restaurant yesterday a guy walked up to me and said laughing, "Those are the hardest working 4 cylinders in the business!"
