Yikes

So I literally just got home from a week in Detroit 5 min ago...and the guy who lives across the street from me (in this absolutely run-down, eyesore house that the city's actually tried to condemn, and for all intents and purposes plays the noble role of neighborhood pariah) comes jogging up to me, telling me that he's traded in his '70's era stingray (with a duct-taped bumper and everything) for a brand new, bright yellow, american flag decal-ed, chromed-out rimmed, 4-speed, leased Chevy SSR. Now, that doesn't really bother me, freedom to choose, and whatnot. BUT THEN, he goes on to say, "Betcha wish you could've had one of those!"

A tumbleweed blows across the street in the silence. Me in rumpled business casual, garment bag still in hand. Him in jorts and a tank top. The showdown continues.

A few remarks run through my head, and in the interest of not invoking the ire of the country-inclined folk of the area, I go with the frank, "I don't even know what to say to that." His response: "It's all about the attitude man!"

I'm sorry if this comes across poorly...I just really need to vent.

Lol. You did the right thing. Bite your tongue, let him revel in his happiness, we all seek something different in a car (though I haven't quite figured out what the SSR buyers are looking for when they choose that).

That is pretty funny. Especially the word "jorts". I love it.

Congratulate the guy. I don't get the SSR, but obviously it does the trick for him.

Ask him how many MPGs he gets in the SSR and then point out how your Elise does better.

An update: He's already tried to "drag" with me down our 25mph limit residential neighborhood...

Did he rev the engine?!

SSR's are cool. They're different at the least. Don't see too many of them.

I think it's nice that he has a nice car (truck), since it sounds like he will probably be living in it shortly (or jortly, in this case).

I don't get the SSR either. To expand on Randy's mullet theme it's the automotive equivelent of the 10/90. 10% Sporty 90% Truck, instead of 10% in the front, 90% in the back!!

He likely thinks he has a brand spankin' new El Camino!

Cary, sadly, I would respect an El Camino far more...For lack of anything else, those cars have undeniable character.

Yeah, I would much sooner own an El Camino than a SSR.

I don't understand the SSR at all. Why Why Why? Uniqueness, I guess...but Citroens are unique, too.

geez....maybe i dont belong here....im not big on pickup trucks but i drove one of those....i think it had the 6 liter engine. i thought it ran quite strong. nice interior....and yes, different. i wouldnt buy one, not for me, but its a nice vehicle.
we cant all drive miatas, s2000s and elises.
a lot of people walk away from our cars shaking their heads in wide wonder why anyone would spend 50k on a car that half its owners have to be greased up and crowbarred to get in and out of....
anyway.....dont drag race him....if he beats u, u will NEVER hear the end of it.

It is admitted by all that he was much addicted to women, as well as very expensive in his intrigues with them, and that he debauched many ladies of the highest quality; among whom were Posthumia, the wife of Servius Sulpicius; and Lollia, the wife of Aulus Gabinius.

I can appreciate the fact that it's not the worst car on the road...it's probably got tons of redeemable qualities. I guess the biggest problem I have w/ the SSR is that, for whatever reason you'd buy one, there's a car out there that does it better....uniqueness, straight-line speed, price, cornering, looks, towing capacity, etc.

An update: the same guy just went out and bought a 350Z convertible (automatic). Definitely more respectable, IMHO. But, three things I'm wondering...where in Hades did this guy come up with $80K+ to blow on cars, why doesn't he have a garage, and what's he going to drive come winter?

Mike, you gotta come over sometime and see it for yourself...
