One summer while I was in grad school, I took a job as a security guard in a state mental hospital. My job was to secure the building (shake door knobs, lock doors and night, unlock in the morning, be last out of building in case of fire, etc.) and I didn't deal with patients.

One night a patient, about 20 years old, went into a schizophrenic rage. I was awed by the strength he had in that state. He threw a couch about 15 feet. He three a TV across the room into a wall. It was a scary experience.

There were 6 aides trying to hold him down and they were having a lot of trouble. I came in and helped... I held his feet in an arm lock. A nurse administered 75 ml of thorazine, IP, and he settled down after a few minutes. They put him in a padded room to sleep it off... but he broke out again about 20 minutes later. They gave him another 75 ml and strapped him down in the padded room... he slept 24 hours.

I got a good talking to the next day. I should not have helped. The aides were bonded... I wasn't. I was told that I could have been sued and that the hospital could have been sued.

I talked to the guy a few days later. He didn't remember anything about the incident.

That was a real eye-opener for me.

February my car was hit and run in a busy parking lot. When I returned to the vehicle two ladies mentioned the saw the whole thing (as they were parked 3 spots away when it happened). Neither got the license plate and when I asked for their phone one womans response, "I don't want to get involved."

Two weeks ago my coworker's husband, while jogging around SF GGP was struck in the back by an SUV that blew through a stop sign. Because he was incapacitated, the police only took statements from two ladies in the vehicle. Guess what the police report said. "Oh he jumped out in front of us." There were other pedestrians at the scene who didn't bother to stick around for the police to set them straight.

Think of it like this... a drug addict wielding a baseball bat is like a bear mauling a person. They can't be reasoned with.
I would agree there is a factor of self preservation in many cases. I also agree with Dragonrider in many cases the only detriment to reporting a crime is the time it takes to do so. Shirking a neighborly responsibility in this manner just makes for a worse place to live.

It's a tough call, and hard to know what I would do if actually confronted with that situation.
Good point. I would only go so far as to point it at the maniac. Can you imagine how quickly you would be sued for if you shot this "innocent man?"

Exactly!

So, when you actually stop to think about it, and put ourselves in those observers shoes, it's a bit difficult to criticize them for not taking action.

It's sad, but that's the society we live in.

I like the dramatic music and sound effect added for effect in the Dr. Phil clip.

Looks like that kid has "go outside and play" fail as well

Right about then she needs to pick that fat assed kid up, bend him over the chair, yank his pants down for the world to see on national television, and spank the ever living crap out of him. THEN he might 'see' that she is, indeed, the parent and the boss.

Of course, then the liberal bleeding hearts would scream that she's an unfit parent and probably have her arrested.

Kinda have to say +1. Being the kid's 'friend' garners no respect. IMO, that's part of the reason kids don't respect their elders (or authority or the law, for that matter) in general nowadays.

Back in the day, if I talked back to anyone remotely older than me, I'd have gotten my a$$ kicked! Honestly, I'd probably have gotten my a$$ kicked before I even had the opportunity to talk back.

Well, I'm a bleeding heart liberal and I'd worry that we'd be teaching the kid that violence is a resonable approach.

And, while I worried about that, I'd have smacked him hard.

We would then have taught him to pick his fights.

As long as learning happens....

PS: I've posted before that peer pressure and fear of embarrassment can be effectively use. So, I agree.
