I have a picture of bells in grizzly bear sh!t. I went backpacking in Glacier National Park with a guy who was very paranoid about grizzly bears. He gave me one of his pepper-spray cans and he carried a cook pan with several bells in it during the entire hike. About every 20-30 paces, he'd shake the pan.
We camped in the snow -- about a foot deep with temperatures down to about 10 F... nearly froze my butt off... had to turn every 15 to 20 minutes to let one cheek thaw while the other froze. We spotted a pile of bear crap on the trail on the way back to the car. Don't know what kind of bear. We set up the shot... wish I could find the picture. A couple of days before we started, we listened to a talk from a guy who had hiked Glacier for over 20 years and took many grizzly photos. He said he always carried a .44 Magnum -- any thing smaller would just make a grizzly madder.
