Thanks - my 401k has none of my comany's stock in it.
But It still managed to lose 12% this year.

Timing is everything! I essentially paid for my Elise from stock options and stock purchased through an employee stock purchase plan. I had enough company stock that I could have sold it to pay for the car. Instead, I paid for the car from my home equity line of credit, expecting the stock would continue to appreciate. I knew a lot of people that used the ESP to get a 15% return every six months -- the ESP allowed purchase at 6 month intervals at 15% below the lowest closing market rate of the beginning and ending dates of the ESP period.

I bought the car in January 2006 and had planned to sell stock and pay off the HECL loan 15 to 18 months later. I didn't get the chance. The company was target of a $4B leveraged buyout and became privately owned. I paid about $15/share. The buyout offer was $40/share and occurred in December. My target to sell was only $23/share. I had a windfall

There is an epic fail in all of this. The company raised $2B in debt to help finance the buyout. The economy started to sour and the company's major customers started to tank. They were not making enough to cover interest on that $2B debt. Their financial statements only show a profit if the remove tax and interest expenses... after taxes and interest they're losing big time!

They've had several big layoffs to cut expenses... I lost my job a year ago, there was another layoff 6 months after that, and I expect they're about due for another one.

Yes, the ESP is very useful in successful stock trading.

hahah I remeber whne the company went public. There were auditors all around and I loved to shred a whole bunch of old papers while looking over my shoulder. They looked at me and I looked away..... fun times
