That one was a fun one. Here is a bit of a dumb solution. I'm sure there are much more elegant ways to do it:

I think I'm going to be fired....if my friends don't kill me first from showing them this.

I finished all the basic 20 levels pretty quick, with "Handling" giving me the most trouble. Now I keep trying to find different ways to solve them all again!

Been working on a Lotus Elise looking one, but it's hard to draw it out on the side. I tried to put 4 balls (inline 4?) between the two wheels to make and made it a MR layout, but once i put the body on, and run it, the body falls apart. Anyone want to give it a shot?

Thanks! I've got a book about mechanical linkages. I'll bet Turbophil has a similar book. That four-link hinge he came up with to control the rear clam tilt path is genius. Here is a revised crab that actually looks more like a crab: revised crab

I did this one too: faster but not as cool spider It's faster, but takes eight legs and they are simple rotary motions. I think the D-path output of the first crab is a lot more interesting. Put a variation of this guy into junkyard: scorpion

What's the book (or another suggested reading)? I'm missing out!!! You've inspired me!

Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook, Fourth Edition

It covers a lot, but is pretty simple. It does not go into all the math for any particular gizmo. You would want a book specific to four-bar linkages, for example, if you actually wanted to learn how to engineer a specific solution.

But it gives plenty of ideas. The section on 'linkages for straight line motion' has an example for producing a D-shaped output curve from a rotary input. Such linkage arrangements are used for product advancement, or most commonly for film advancement, where the tool must vertically drop into the film's hole, pull it so far, and then vertically remove itself. I figured such a thing would make a good stroke for a crab's foot. Then it was just a matter of playing around with link lengths and angles to get him to stand up and not trip over himself.
