Heading out to Japan next week. Things to do?

So I'll be heading out to Kobe, Japan next week on a business trip. Has anyone been there before? Any suggestions on things to do?

No I will not bring back Toybox or RAC wheels. (maybe just a set for myself)

Of course it depends on what you like.
Nature: Nara deer park, or snow monkey park near Kyoto.
Beautiful walks: Kyoto's temples and gardens.
Night life: Osaka Dontonuri or Tokyo's Kabuki cho
Weird: parasite museum, or frozen fish museum.
Sumo, Sushi, skiing, tsukiji market.
electronics, vending machines, cat cafes.
Maid cafes, more sushi (get the otoro) Kabuki, green tea ice cream.
Since you're in Kobe, eat some Kobe, and sake.. and ... there's so much to eat.

If you get the chance check out the Ramen Museum. You even get to design your own cup of ramen! It's a bit far from kobe though about an hour by train.

Re: Heading out to Japan next week. Things to do?

How about a ride Tokyo - Kyoto in the bullet train? It is not terribly fast but fun though.

If your next business trip takes you to China, definitely ride the train to Shanghai airport in the magnetic train...insane...speedometer (two per car) showed 431km/h!

I've been to Japan 4 times and the last time was for 3 months. I haven't been since 1993 though and never to Kobe. I recommend checking out the main shopping/dining drag in the area and just try walking around and taking it in. Do some people watching and try the food as much as possible and drink Sake. It's almost like visiting another planet so the simple things are fun. It's not necessary to go to the typical tourist type places. You might want to go to Mount Rokko nearby to the north for a great view. There is a lift you can take. I think about a third of Japan's Sake is made in that prefecture. Check out an electronics store. Back then when I went, it was like seeing stuff from the future when you went to an electronics store. I picked up an NES two years before it was released in the US. There are some castles and hot springs not far away and the longest suspension bridge in the word if I'm not mistaken. Have fun.
