How To Change Your Elise Color in Photoshop - LotusTalk

This method gives by far the most realistic results that I've yet achieved. Starting with your Polygonal Lasso tool, trace out an outline of all the unobscured colored sections that you want to change the color of. To remove an island from a closed selection, use Alt+Click to begin a selection within the existing selection. To add to the current selection, use Shift+Click to start your new selection.

Once you've got the whole thing traced out, use Ctrl+J to copy the selection into a new layer.

In your layer control box, hide and unhide the original picture so you can see the new layer by itself.

Repeat the above for the obscured sections - pieces of color behind glass, etc. These should be on a separate layer, because they will use a different blending mode to maintain the glassy look.

Go to each of your two new layers and select Image->Adjust->Gradient Map from the top menu. Using the open image of the color you want to duplicate, create a gradient of a 3-4 color range, including black at the bottom end and the brightest (near white) reflected color in the range. Adjust the sliders as necessary to achieve the proper effect.

Make any other necessary adjustments to your new layers. The obscured layer should be set to type "color" or "overlay" and set to 75% opacity or so. you may need to touch up your edges with an eraser tool or cut out a missed portion. But anyhow, the end result is a new color!

PS - this whole process takes no more than 10 minutes once you've got some experience with the polylasso tool. and you can add new colors to the same photo in a snap by shift-clicking one of your color layers and using the selection to make a new color layer from the original!

The screenshots are made using the Print Screen button. I use photoshop to make them pretty.

Nicely put. A good friend recently showed me how to use the 'pen tool' to delete backgrounds from images. Changing colors is next on my list

If step #5 is too scary for you, while you've still got your paint selected, Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation > check off colorize. Go nuts.
