I still have a spout or two.

OK, who's actually seen a set of points?

She did a great job. She needed a little help loosening some things here and there, but really did do everything herself. She didn't ask once what was next, just went from step one to two to three... She did ask if it was OK to say a bad word or two when the oil pours out of the pan all over her arm. I learned that even when I don't think the kids are paying attention they probably are .

She'll make more money babysitting for sure. The wife and I pay $$ for dinner/date in the nicest places in town and $$$$$ in sitter fees .

Tracy, I'm only 24 so I don't remember any cardboard cans .

Good job! I didn't start doing that stuff until I was 16. And to this day I still have trouble getting some lug nuts off, or that one caliper bolt...

If you think that is old time, I used to pump bulk straight weight oil into 1 qt. glass oil bottles for my grandfather at his Standard Oil service station. The oil came in 50 gallon barrels and you had to attach a hand pump to the top them and then pump each glass bottle and screw on a foot long tapered metal spout top to the bottle when you were done. You would place all these filled bottles into metal baskets (kind of like the ones used for milk bottles) that were labeled with the weight of the oil. When a customer stopped to "fill 'er up" and you cleaned their windshield, checked the fan belt and their oil and water while you pumped their Ethyl gas (self serve gas didn't exist then--when was the last time your car was fully serviced at the pump?), you would offer them a quart of oil from the glass bottles if they were down a quart and they would respond with the oil weight they were using. The long tapered tops were there so you could get to the oil filler on the old tall engines without spilling oil on the engine and to keep you from leaning on their fender while you poured it in. I still remember when those glass bottles were replaced with all metal cans, but my grandfather still kept them out on display filled with the oil. I also remember there were no caps for those metal tops so the longer the bottles sat, the more dust would get into the oil. Those were different times! O.K., now that I have proven myself to be as old as dirt, we can continue on with this thread!

Great job on that oil change #2! You will make a lot of boys jealous and more than a bit nervous when you get older and show them how to fix their car while they don't have a clue as to what needs to be done!

(BTW, I just adjusted the ignition points on my BMW during its spring tune up............)

Nice work and way to go. Knowing how to do your own service goes a long way and the best way to learn is by doing.

I also remember the cardboard cans (I still have a couple of spouts myself), points, and tune ups (I still have all the tools), nowadays you talk about dwell and people look at you funny.

Now you realy want to date yourself how about cars with 4 wheel drum brakes hehehe Oh yea and how about mechamical brakes (non-hydraulic)

relevant story about tune ups (from "Inept Friends....or, The Blood Washed it Off":

III. Bob’s Dad Thinks Tune-ups Take 2 Weeks to “Set”

Bob is a well-known auto engineer; you may have seen him on TV. He’s also one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met. His dad, not so much.
When Bob was young, his dad fancied himself a good amateur mechanic. He would tune-up the family car and then, about two weeks later, it would run great.

So, he lclaimed that these things take about 2 weeks to “set”. He swore by this theory.

What he didn’t know is that Bob, being a busy guy, didn’t get around to undoing what his father had done for about…..two weeks.

You kids might be treating dad like this in a few years...
