I really like Jay Leno. He's a good guy, but...
...looks like his show is in trouble.
He NEVER should have relinquished the Tonight Show. FX's 'Anarchy' is first basic cable series to beat Leno--The Live Feed | THR ![]()

From what I understand he did not have a choice in the matter. Conan had it in his contract the the tonight show was he. I could be wrong but that's what I remember hearing.

I wonder what he has planned for his car collection when he passes? I think I may be his long lost son that he doesnt know about yet. Maybe it's time to introduce myself.

Jay and Conan For The Loss.
Letterman stopped being funny 10 years ago. Craig Ferguson is orders of magnitude funnier. Just my opinion...

NBC asked Jay to step aside, but stay with NBC when Conan's deal was up. Jay could've played hardball and threatened to go to ABC or FOX. NBC would have then had to decide between Jay or Conan for the Tonight Show. Seeing how strong the ratings for the Tonight Show were (5 years ago when the deal was made), NBC would probably have kept Jay and let Conan go. But Leno rolled over and accepted NBC's deal. As the time got closer however, Jay started to make noise about losing the Tonight Show and it was clear that Jay was not happy. NBC, sensing that they had a potentially bad situation brewing, decided to capitulate to Jay and offer him the 10pm slot. A horrible decision. Now it puts NBC, Jay AND Conan in a bad spot. What happens if Jay fails? What happens is Conan fails? What happens is they BOTH fail? It looks like the worst case scenario is happening. Jay's numbers are cratering. Conan is now losing to Letterman. And the whole ordeal is killing the ratings for NBC and their affiliates. Stay tuned! ![]()

![]() Yup, that's pretty much how it went down. It was definitely not Jay's decision to leave, as he would have preferred to have kept on doing the Tonight Show almost indefinitely - or at least as long as Johnny Carson had hosted it. (so I've been told by others on staff) but in 2004, Conan's contract was up for renewal, and the boneheads running NBC at the time didn't want to lose Conan, or the hip-younger demographics he appealed to, so they figured in 5 years he'd be prime to take over the Tonight Show. oh well. Although it should also be mentioned that the 10pm weeknight show would never have been considered if not for the fact that NBC was losing bleeding $ in that timeslot to begin with. NBC had no good drama's to air, and basically threw in the towel and figured they could save millions by letting Jay do his show every night instead for 1/5 the cost. As far as cost savings, it's been a success, on paper at least, as they promised advertisers a 1.5 rating or better. But obviously it's not going to draw the same numbers as top rated drama's in that timeslot. It should be interesting to see how the numbers fare when the competition goes into reruns as Leno continues with fresh shows (46 weeks or shows instead of 22 episodes for primetime shows) NBC committed to the whole year, and I'm obviously optimistic the show will continue, tho right from the start I envisioned that they'd eventually change it up to 4 or 3 nights a week or something. who knows. Ironically, while I've worked occasionally for the show for 5 years freelance, and been working on the new show since August, and had bumped into him in the hallway and kitchen a few times, only a few days ago was I properly introduced to him. I asked him how he liked driving the Citroen he drove into work that day, he asked me if i was into cars.. and I told him about my "collection", he mistakenly thought my '74 MGB was the rubber bumper variety and told me I could lower it. - and when I told him about my Elise he chimed in how he loves his two Elans. I definitely admire the guy for his work ethic and passion for automobiles, the guy lives and breathes comedy and cars. The Show itself, well, it's pretty much the same writers and crew from the previous Tonight Show. - all of whom are pretty grateful to still be working. (only a couple of them switched over to Conan's show). - so it's essentially the same exact show that used to air at 11:30, with less musical acts, only one major celebrity, and a few other things changed up. But it's the same comedy. But that said, I also agree, while it worked perfect at the 11:30 slot, it seems a bit flat at 10pm. Since this was not only a cost-cutting measure for NBC, and also a bit of an experiment, they didn't quite commit as much money towards it. - and it shows. Conan currently has 2 more video editors and 3 more graphics/fx people than we do! when you see the monologue, I'm the only guy doing all the gag fx jokes, and then there's only one guy doing all the graphics for the segments.- for a primetime network show that's pretty crazy. hopefully NBC will pump a little extra into it once to booster ratings, if that's possible.

Interesting last post. I watch Jay several times per week now because of the earlier time slot. I always enjoyed the headlines, JayWalking, and the monologues in the old time slot but because I start work early in the morning, I could seldom stay up to watch. My wife watches it nightly except when football is on. I must agree that it's obvious that the show is being done on the cheap. No significant format change from the late night show. I think there would definitely be benefit from a bit higher production values. Sad to see the money is wasted on that creepy Conan who's about as funny as Nancy Pelosi. I guess he appeals to a certain market that has a high disposeable income and is politically popular. I sure hope Jay does well with this show but at this time, his monologue is the only thing carrying the show...Dave
