one more thing, I see R8 is all over these games' cover.

I really think they are over rated and not a "race" car. more like a stylish "super car"

Game videos always put R8 with corvettes and lotus and ford gt together which to me they are in different class.

Please check out the game videos from Need For Speed Shift and Forza 3 on youtube, even if you don't play childish video games. These games might teach our next generations how to drive! Since they are so realistic in driving, especially the details to the cars (ie. interiors)

The games are all trying to beat a very famous game from Sony Playstation Gran Turismo 5, that has not come out yet. If you would also check out videos on this GT5. you will be amazed how detailed GT5 can be. recently they did a video about how they make the new Mercedes-Benz SLS into the game.

I have always been a fan of Gran Turismo starting from series 1 and now I am amazed how realistic technology have made these games.

just my 0.02 contribute to the LT

hope I am not too childish here

Jacky-

Forza 3's got the Exige in it. I've got a full carbon fiber bodied one I made in the Livery Editor as my Lotus right now in FM3.

No way are you too childish. Forza has sucked up the last 4-5 years of my life, if you're childish, i'm sitting in the same boat as you.

...forza 3 looks and drives very nicely, unfortunately it doesn't include the federal elise - just the 2005 111s and 2006 exige cup 240...

Shift has both the Elise and Exige in it. But you can mod the Elise more to a higher level than the Exige.
The drift racing in this game sucks. Worst I have ever come across. There's no way a car reacts like that. Barely tap the throttle from a stand still, and the car spins a 180 degrees. Other than that, gameplay is good. Points for aggression is nice.

Cheers,

Not childish! Most of the games I've played have had nothing to do with racing. Driving games gave me a headache with the odd aliasing and that shimmering effect the bad graphics had. Now I'm seeing the adverts for the games you mentioned and I have to say WOW! It really has me thinking, can you learn a track using a video game like in that episode of Top Gear? Someone posted these about 2 weeks ago - Game Racing Seat. the best place to put your Steering Wheel | playseats Probably rounds out the experience nicely.

How do you guys feel about learning the turns in a video game first and then taking the Elise out to that track?

The tracks in games that mimic the ones in real life, are fairly close. The layouts anyways. Once ya hit the track in real life though, there's obviously going to be pitches/angles, bumps, buckling in the track, slopes/grades, width differences, traction changes, and so on that didnt make it to the cut for the game. But you'll still have the basic layout of how the track is set up and what to expect. Then you just have to adjust to the real life track conditions, and hammer down! Giver 'er chit and make er stink! Foot to the oil pan! Give it to her! Git er done!

Cheers,

...i have a force-feedback wheel/pedal setup for forza 3 and it's a remarkably realistic simulation, plus the new clutch/shifter support promise to take that realism even further...

...absolutely anyone can learn from it - forza 3 is the first console simulation which stands toe-to-toe against dedicated computer simulators and comes out ahead...

Forza 3 isn't released in the US yet. =/

According to this list, the game actually has less lotus in it than Forza 2 did.

Forza 3:
2009 Lotus Evora
2006 Lotus Exige Cup 240
2005 Lotus Elise 111S

Forza 2:
2005 Lotus Elise 111S
2005 Lotus Exige
2005 Lotus Exige Espionage
2005 Lotus Exige Cup 240
2003 Lotus Elise 135R
2002 Lotus Esprit V8
1989 Lotus Carlton
1972 Lotus Elan Sprint

...there are a few more lotus cars included in the initial release than those you've listed, but certainly not many compared to the 30 porsche or 26 ferrari offerings...

1972 Lotus Elan Sprint
1989 Lotus Carlton
2002 Lotus Esprit V8

...i've only played the demo so far, so can't confirm whether their 111S is an old K-series or newer 1ZZ-FE car, regardless, i'm skeptical that we'll be able to recreate our federal 111R in spite of a probable 2ZZ-GE swap due to the unlikely availability of our transmission, just like forza 2...

Yeah, but can you attach a twin turbo to the Evora?

The only one that comes close to real life tracks is iRacing (iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations). This is due to the way they map the tracks and it gives the game all those bumps, buckling and extra things that make it ultra realistic. They go to the actual track and laser scan the entire thing. Games like Gran Turismo, Forza and Need for Speed all generate their tracks in a much different way. I used iRacing to learn Infineon before I went out on it, and I feel it made a significant difference in my confidence on track. Too bad my stomach didn't like the real thing though.

I use Rfactor to practice the new Colorado High Plains Raceway before I went out there. I think that helped my confidence too.

Not Mac friendly. So much for that I guess. Back to NFS.

It'll apparently be out in North America on Oct.27th, and has been released already to Europe and Asia a few days ago.
Wondering though, why they picked the '05 Elise and the '06 Exige?

I dont know why, maybe just me.
I felt cartoon-ish and anime-ish with Forza and NFS

(gonna buy Forza 3 infew minutes)

The real simulation on arcade console IMO is the gran turismo.

Graphics more realistic, but cant beat the details on Forza

...not anymore, seriously - even the iracing hardcore have been stunned with what turn 10 accomplished in forza 3's simulation and track models...

...need for speed is still a console arcade racer, but i believe gran turismo 5 will take a similar approach to forza 3 and iracing in terms of realism...

Although I have not yet done this, I'm convinced that you can. This video has been shown before, but check it out for one example of how close these sims can get. This is comparison of a lap around Nordschleife in Hans Stuck’s BMW M3 GTR, compared with doing the same lap in SIMBIN's GTR Evolution racing sim (which is my favorite non-subscription-based sim):
GTR Evolution Nordschleife - Reality Check on Vimeo.

I don't doubt it's good, but I just can't bring myself to own yet another console...blah I hate exclusive titles.
