If you rent a Lotus Elise, this is what they will probably hand you...

Letter given at car rental office to person renting a Lotus Elise:

Dear Hertz renter:

Congratulations! You are renting a Lotus Elise, one of the most incredible sports cars in the world!

Just a few things to look out for:

Your trunk will hold one (1) overnight bag. That's it. Sorry. Be sure the bag is totally secure or it will ram a hole in the tender skin of the Elise. Damage could run as high as $1000.

If you know what's good for you you will exit driveways and enter driveways at no more than 2 mph. Any faster and extreme damage can occur to the front of the car, known as the front clam. Damage could run as high as $2700

Do not exceed the rpm limit in any gear. Over revving the engine will cause the rev limiter to cut in, but you may have already done EXTREME DAMAGE to the engine. Damage could run as high as $2000.

Check oil and water levels yourself. DO NOT trust this to the rental guy, as he has no idea how to service a Lotus and could care less if the engine explodes from misuse. Damage could run as high as $3500.

Do not attempt to remove the top yourself as you have no idea what you are doing. Failure to do this correctly could result in tremendous damage to the car or the interior. Damage could run as high as $2500.

If the top is off and it starts to rain do not attempt to put the soft top on. You have no idea what you are doing. Get the car into a garage area and WAIT for the rain to stop. Damage from rain could destroy the interior and run as high as $2000.

If you are going to park the car overnight DO NOT let anyone else drive it or park it. We are sorry for the inconvenience. You and you alone are the only one who can drive the car and be responsible for it. Believe us, you do not want anyone else driving/wrecking this car. Damage could run as high as TOTALED.

Do not take this car into a car wash. If you want it clean, stop and buy rags and borrow a hose and wash it yourself. The car will be extremely damaged in an automatic car wash. Damage to the finish could run as high as $2000.

Do not let a small child ride with you, even if you promised him/her that they could. They could be killed by the air bag. Damage could be as high as LIFE IN JAIL for attempted murder.

Please read over 100 areas of the car that could be instantaneously damaged by a simple mistake. And don't forget the small print that states that you are responsible for any SUV's that plow into the back of the car. Oh yes, and remember, if anyone eggs the car -- YOU pay to get the car repainted.

Thank you and enjoy your Lotus rental experience.

Great. Really nice.

Why would they ever rent a Lotus Elise?

The damage values are screwed up.

Only $2000 if you blow the engine due to over-revving.
But $3500 if you blow the engine due to low oil or coolant?

I tried to rent one before I bought so I could play with it for a long weekend and see how it felt. But I couldn't round here (Bay Area) ... so I bought one anyway :-)

They should have a little paragraph in there about what to do if little bits fall off the car. Something like:

"If you notice 1.) unusual squeaking or rattling sounds 2.) any loose trim or foam oozing from the doors or 3.) any screws, rivets or plastic bits rolling around in the footwells recite the following phase while gradually depressing the accelerator toward the floor: "

Oh, and:

"Do not drop anything into the engine bay. It will be lost to you for all eternity"

Don't forget the mandatory 15 minute video showing how to get into and out of the car properly, with extra care to explain the damage that can be done if using the windscreen as leverage.

Also, will it include detailed instructions on how to start the car using the proper sequence with the key fob?

Oh and don't forget a primer on which "position" the interior light can be adjusted to, so as not to set off the alarm. Or maybe they could just glue the interior lights in place.

Aren't you guys being a little harsh?

The test drive program that we have just announced will give a number of non-owners a chance to experience the thrill of driving the Elise.

Hopefully thier experience will be a positive one only increasing the number of people on this site that actually own one instead of dreaming of owning one.

For those of you that didn't see the press release.....

Lotus Cars USA, Inc

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENT-A-DREAM!
LOTUS ELISE HITS USA RENTAL FLEETS

ATLANTA – September 14, 2006 – Management of Lotus Cars USA, Inc., the exclusive distributor for Lotus sports cars in the United States and Canada, has today made the following announcement.

In response to the extraordinary popularity of the stunning Lotus Elise exotic sports car here in the USA, rental fleets across the country have now, for the first time ever, ordered a number of cars to be offered to their customers under various exotic car rental programs.

The Lotus Elise offers a formidable performance package and a reminder of what it’s really like to drive a true sports car. The Lotus Elise rental program opens up a world of nostalgia for some who remember the classic open top British sports cars of the 1950’s and 60’s and a world of discovery for those who are yet to experience a car whose styling is pure fashion, whose reactions are immediate and whose performance is so effortless that exhilaration comes standard!

“The adoption of the Lotus Elise by the rental companies is a strong confirmation of the desirability and durability of our car,” commented Lotus Cars USA, Inc. President and CEO, Robert A. Braner. “We know from discussions with our dealers that they have had numerous requests to rent exotic cars and the Elise is right there at the top of the list, having Lotus cars in rental fleets nationally will give many more people the chance to experience a truly amazing automobile.”

Due to limited availability, the first group of cars will be available only in the following states: California, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania. On a national rollout basis, more states will be added in the coming months.

The award-winning Lotus Elise is a driver’s delight – an open-topped, two-seat, 190 horsepower roadster weighing less than 2000 pounds. This light weight allows the Elise to be extraordinarily fun to drive with nimble steering, agile cornering, stout braking and snappy acceleration. Combine these unrivaled driving dynamics with stunning, sleek design and you have the seductive Lotus Elise.

Lotus cars, could you please find out when the orange ones are being shipped to Budget Rent a Car in Chicago. I am really looking forward to taking delivery and the one with the sport, touring and hardtop might spend some time at my house.

As far as the original post, I am currently working on my addendum for the Elise customers. Most of these issues will be in there. thanks for the help.

Being harsh?

No.

And that's the whole point.

Renting a Lotus Elise to the general public is an insane idea and will fail miserably.

But Larry, they've been renting out these cars for years in UK and Europe at selected rental companies, certainly the rental companies must think it'll work here or they wouldn't try it. No doubt it won't be like going to hertz and renting a taurus, imagine they'll be pretty restricted on who rents it and have a whopping deposit.

Couple companies in UK doing it:

http://www.granturismo.demon.co.uk/classic.htm

http://www.carpages.co.uk/go.asp?ses...401163838%4056

The second one lists rental at 245 uk pounds per day!

At the end of the day, seems worth a try.

I drive a Lotus Elise.

It takes a lot of care and patience.

It is designed for the track.

It is a terrible rental car.

It is not worth a try as a rental - it is degrading to these fine cars and the company that designs and makes them.

People love to take pictures of wrecked exotic cars and post them all over the web.

There will be many many photos of wrecked Lotus Elises if this "rental" idea goes forward.

Does Lotus want REALLY bad press? That's a great start. It'll read:

"Another wrecked Lotus. What's with these cars?"

Renting a Lotus would be good for anyone looking to take an extra long test drive. I'd like to rent one in that case.

Whats going to happen to the cars when they're purchased back by Lotus? Flood the market with used raggedy ultra cheap Elises? What will that do for the brand?

That's assuming there's anything left to "buy back" after 10 months as a rental.
