My HTC (Cingular/AT&T) 8125 and then 8525 had HORRIBLE reception.
I could use my AT&T Razr in places where I could never use the HTC handsets, even though I loved them for their ability and interfaces, RF ability was nill.

What about the iPhone and the Treo products? I should say I am happy with the RF reception of my Nokia E61i, but the interface is pretty bad and very very very slow... too bad, because Nokia was always leaps & bounds ahead in both..

Bummer that you're having trouble. My 3G has been equally as solid a my original. Make sure that you have all of the latest updates installed. For me, the $10/month extra for the high-speed 3G data is well worth it.

Also, if you bought your iPhone from AT&T or Apple they'll give you the $199 price if you sign a new 2-year contract. If for some reason it didn't work that way for you you need to go talk to a different AT&T store as this is well documented.

Only if you're not already under contract with a subsidized phone. But yeah, they've been clear that anyone with a iPhone v1 qualifies as there were no subsidies in place.

I do enjoy the 3G, it is worth the extra $

I installed the new firmware that came out this past week, I am still having problems with freezing among other things.

I have come to conclusion that the problem with dropping calls and text messaging is due to lack of service (after all I do live in a town called Summerfield ha ha).

My biggest concern is the battery in the new 3g. While it is not that bad and lasts the whole day, It gets down to 20% alot faster then my old phone.

Other then that I would choose the iphone over any other phone since it has iTunes capabilities, it makes things much easier.

That's wrong. Only thing I can think of that would make a difference is if when you originally signed up with AT&T, you took another phone, even briefly, before you bought the iPhone. Otherwise, they owe you money.

The iPhone is fantastic. I love it. Bought mine a few months after the initial release and haven't looked back. Well, I did have to have my phone replaced - twice. Once my fault, once not. But Apple did not hesitate to give me a brand new phone immediately both times right there in the store. Very good service.

Verizon is no better here than AT&T, so it's a no-brainer for me.

Do you have a lot of apps installed? Supposedly people are finding that having LOTS of apps installed at once seems to freak the phone out. I haven't experienced this, but I only have ~10 apps installed at once.

I agree, the battery life is the biggest downside to the 3G upgrade. I found that turning off the "ask me to join new wifi networks" option helped life noticeably. I also turn off the auto brightness adjustment. Still, it isn't as good as the old one, and I'd like more life in a future version.

I have had a Verizon PPC for years. I just switched to the iphone with a 30 day bailout if needed. The AT&T's network sucks GSM compaired to Verizion's CMDA for Data. But I really love the phone and Hate apple's nickle and dime you with iTunes. So jailbreak it ASAP with free cut and paste software and other functions. If you don't type a lot this device rules.

My list to change:
AD2P or all Bluetooth functions
Flash Card Access
RingTone Access
QIK.com installed
iTunes still works just in case
Teather for a Modem

I have 5 apps installed, I do have the 8 gig one though and have about 5 gigs of music... I might try to lighten up the music and see if it works any better... makes me kick myself that i didnt get the 16 gig one.

I will have to try turning off the "ask to join new wifi networks" option and the auto brightness one. The battery life is noticeable different, but I guess it doesn't help that I play that TRIS (tetras) knock off game a great deal. I also admit that I play the free hangman app too, I know its stupid but its a good waste of time.

I guess I'm not all that disappointed with the new phone... Of course I always wish it would send picture messages and record video! maybe they could come out with a new release someone in a firmware upgrade, but who knows.

I will have to call ATT. The iPhone was the first phone I had with them, the kid working at the apple store said I couldn't get it for $200 because I haven't had ATT long enough. I went ahead and bought the phone anyway for full price since I had waited an hour in line and I also go the sweet orange case which matched my (sold) car.

...gosh I want the 07 CO exige leftover at the dealer in Durham, NC......

You can change the radio(antenna driver basically) on the phone. certain versions work better in certain areas. some also kill the battery faster than others.

Current first gen iPhone user... Had a Samsung Blackjack before, the iphone is far superior in web surfing and the interface is cool looking and intuitive. My gripes about the phone are A. no Flash support when browsing, B. camera absolutely sucks and C. Speakerphone and Audio playback on the speakers are low and because they are low are useless. Other than that I love using the iphone and would have a hard time going back to old clunky browsing and uninsiring interfaces on other phones. I will say that I wasn't compelled to upgrade to the new 3G iphone as I'm usually in or around a wi-fi hotspot and hardly use Edge anyway. Also since the iPhone is hackable, and I've hacked it, that GPS stuff doesn't excite me as I already have it plus a bunch of other apps. =)
