^^^^ Superb. I posted a pic of my friends 1098... no strips and all his bike's bits are just fine/minty. Perhaps your 916 has more bits to scrape

And what's this about no cafe racing? I guess in your area you must have a lot of poseurs that do...... Just curious, how many miles do you ride a year?

I have limited time to stand by my bike as I favor riding to posing.

Hey Rich, it may have already been said but spend the money and buy the best helmet, jacket, gloves, boots you can find. It could save your life/limb someday, like it did mine. I had a slow speed crash with my girlfriend on 360 a couple years ago. The people who stopped where amazed that I was conscience after seeing my head(with helmet) bounce off the pavement. My girlfriend, thankfully, only broke her arm. Also, learn from my mistake and if you do spend the money on the gear, make sure you wear it right, no matter how hot it gets. If I didn't have my jacket half unzipped and the sleeves rolled up (cause it was 100 freakin degrees) I wouldn't have had a scratch. Since then, I wear all my gear as it was intended to be worn. Sweating sux but it takes a while for road rash to heal and it ain't pleasant. Send me a PM if you wanna go riding sometime. Have fun and be safe out there

Thanks for the advice. I plan on doing just that...

I'm thinking this would be cool:
2007 SV650

Also, for those SV650 owners out there, it appears that there is both an SV650 (naked bike) and an SV650S (much bigger rake on the handle bars and fairings). I sat on a 650S today and it seemed like it had a bit too much forward lean for a first bike.

Also the 650S was at the Ducati dealership as a used bike and they were saying $5500 out the door which seemed too expensive to me...

Yes, that is correct, the SV650S has a sport fairing, and clipons which makes the reach very uncomfortable. The SV650 is much nicer for a 1st time bike, and for those of us who know better...

$5500 OTD? MAYBE depending on the year and mileage.

Nice bike, I would have a trusted dealer look at it ($50). At 20k, I believe the valves are due, but if I recall correctly, my bike didn't need anything done to them.

If the original owner wheelied the bike a lot, (like wheelied it everywhere), the front cylinder may be damaged... rare but I have seen it.

$5.5K for an '07 S?

I thought new SV650 (nakeds) were $5K MSRP?

The SV650's have actually gotten expensive, new. I have no idea what would be a fair price. But I wanted to comment that I still have my SV650 and it has approximately 60k miles and no problems. I maintain it myself - fluids, chain, sprockets, tires, brakes, and a battery. Rock solid.

You really can't go wrong with an SV650.

I have a Ducati Hypermotard and I really love it. I think the upright riding position (sometimes called standard) is very good for first time riders. The wider bars and feet directly beneath you seem natural, like riding a bicycle. The Suzuki SV 650 has these ergonomics.

I'll say something else about naked bikes (motorcycles without fairings), they keep your top end speeds down. All that wind above 90 or so is not very confindence inspiring, which is a good thing for a beginner and someone not looking to lose their license if a cop happens to be near. A friend just got caught doing 109 in a 55. Cuffed him and impounded the bike. He'll probably lose his license (both car and motorcycle) for six months.

Someone else probably mentioned this but ride like you're invisiable and don't try to showoff and you'll be OK. I love the thrill of speed but riding itself is pretty fun too. Enjoy yourself.

Well, I picked up that bike.

Guy wouldn't give me anything off. It's got a minor scratch on one side and the end broken off the brake handle on the other side, supposedly from falling over when parked. With only 4200 miles on it it seems almost new other than the scratch and the brake handle.

I was kind of surprised at the amount of engine braking. It took the 40 mile ride home to get used to keeping a bit of throttle on while shifting so that the engine braking didn't upset the balance of the bike.

I wore a 'regular' leather jacket, my racing gloves, and my car helmet to drive it back here, but I'm thinking that I'm going to get some real motorcycle gear later today or tomorrow.

Wooo hoooo! Now the real fun begins!
Congrats on getting into two wheel ownership!
I always liked the look of the older SV650 with the more oval frame, but you can't complain about that bike. It'll be a good starter.

On gear I have a Shoei X-11 helmet I bought a few years back and I love it. I went through a few of the cheaper helmets and you really notice a huge difference in a good one. Comfort, ventillation, not fogging, lighter, more aerodynamic so easier on your neck (your head is gonna be in the air like mine without a windshield), quieter, less air up under the chin, padding doesn't compress at high speed letting your nose touch the visor lol, etc etc etc. Would of been a lot cheaper in the long run to just get a good helmet first, I probably spent more going through 3 "cheap" ones first. Just drop the money and get a good shoei or Arai first and you'll never regret it.

On a jacket I have a Vanson leather I really like, and a Joe rocket mesh job I never really wear since the Vanson is well ventilated anyway. Aerostitch always always gets great reviews. I have some of the kevlar lined jeans but really need a better set of riding pants. Joe Rocket boots- skip them- they are crap. And the icon titanium knuckled gloves. oh yeah. lol.

Congratulations!

Engine braking on a twin is hefty, but should not be cumbersome... ESPECIALLY with the SV650. Check your tire pressures. In fact, get used to checking your tire pressures because if they are down by 2-5 pounds or so, you will notice a huge difference.

Helmet Harbor is very reasonable, and the BMW Motorcycle shop is a GREAT resource.

Good luck to you and ride safely.
