Lookee what I got. (taxidermy related, not for the SQUEAMISH!)

My friend got this in Montana. I get to turn it into a european mount. He already took the horns and most of the skin off. I get to deflesh, degrease and whiten. Should be a fun day tomorrow!

Aww, it'll look real nice when it's done. The nasty part is getting all that hair and as much meat off before soaking it. It wouldn't be that bad if it was fresh, but it's kind of stinky, well, actually it's real stinky. I don't think I'll be working on this at the kitchen table. This kind of stuff is a real chick magnet.

No, that's a female sheep I believe. This is a pronghorn antelope. The only horned animal that sheds its horns BTW.

Deer shed antlers, not horns. All animals with antlers shed them each year. Animals with horns do not shed them - except for the pronghorn.

If you mount those horns on the nose of your Lotus like Boss Hog you will be my idol.

Boil it in water for a couple hours, works great to remove everything from the skull. Also makes a tasty stew when done.

For enquiring minds go to taxidermy.net and wander around.
Like a fine spaghetti sauce it must be simmered, not boiled. Actually about 82-85Fis the correct range otherwise the teeth and skull will more than likely crack. And everybody knows that possum and skwerl make the best stew!

A european mount is is just a bare bleached skull.
This morning I'm trying to work up the gumptiom to start in on this critter. Trying to formulate a plan so the garage heater wafts the "scent" away from me.......

Time for some lunch

Time for a break and a little clean up and search for some fresh scalpel blades.

Argh - I thought he took the neck off - wrong!

I got a lot of the meat off - still a lot more to go though. I also thought my friend took the eyes out - wrong again - I hate gauging eyes out.

Here he is resting comfortably in the "Dahmer" pot. Time to go watch a little Gunsmoke and eat something.
