"MacRaceBuddy" ??

Hey folks,

Saw this patent today mentioning the accelerometers in Apple MacBooks/MacBook Pros.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...ones_macs.html

What's the potential that with the right software this laptop could make an all-in-one data acqusition device for the track/autocross?

I don't know anything about data resolution/specs or how many degrees of freedom it has (probably just 3), but it makes me wonder.

Anyone looked into this?

Just the fact of showing up at an event with a Mac is funny on its own, but this could potentially be an incredible and economical tool (provided you're already planning to buy one)

I've done quite a bit of data acquisition for motorcycles... what's so funny about showing up at the track with a Mac?!

Nope, I just want to see some track software available for when I purchase my MacBook Pro :-)

Link was posted on an ipod fan site.

Like I said before, I have no idea if the sensor is suitable for this type of use, but it would be real slick if it was.

I would suspect that the accelerometers just sense motion and/or a rate of change in motion, not necessarily a direction, and probably not on multiple distinct axises, and not something that you could tell in which direction the movement was toward.

Actually you do get X,Y,and Z axis with directionality. I have a really fun game of labyrinth where you manipulate the board by tilting the macbook pro. Also there is a multi-desktop app that you can change the desktop by tapping the sides of the mbp.

How sensitive there are or how accurate, i have no clue, but they are there.

do the current macbook pros have the sensor, or is this just future ones?

I have a MacBook Pro, and a pasco accelerometer I'm bringing to the Carlisle Mini road course this weekend, so if there is a sensor and software for the macbook I could use the pasco accelerometer to see if its decently accurate

Current ones have them. There's may be a utility to get the raw data traces, I'll look around.
