I just picked up this gem... Hope to be having some fun with it soon!

Any thoughts on the D90? I figure it's been out long enough that some of you photo nuts would have some insight into it?

Best,

Phil

Being a 1.5:1 camera, you might not get quite the dramatic effect you thought you were going to with that lens. For best effect, you'd need a 1:1.......(I think)

Phil,
My nephew has that exact combination of lens and camera, check out his album link so you can see for yourself, that lens gives a very WIDE and dramatic look:

Cool. That lens is an expensive little guy for prime, but it looks so darn fun.

I don't have the 90, I'm just looking into it. I've worn the finish slick on my D40, which I purchased right when they came out. I'm no expert photographer (As indicated by the D40 equipment.lol), but I'm also not one that ever shoots in "auto" either... So somewhere between your skill level and point-n-shooter--albeit clost to the point-n-shooter...

The 90 looks very promising with the better ISO selection, auto/smart delighting, better sensor, and on-board focusing servo.... I've got pretty solid lenses, with Nikon's 18-200mm and the fisheye, but now I feel like I need to upgrade the body... The 80 doesn't seem like much of a step up from the 40, so I was thinking 90...

Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

I did not take these photos but they are of my car. This guy takes some amazing pictures. This is his first photo shoot of a car. I'm impressed with how well they turned out.

you pretty much nailed the D90 Phil! if your going to take some odd-angled shots the live view button will be most welcomed! I used the live view feature a lot when I took the rig shots.
Yeah, the D90 looks like a great deal.

jwood - beautiful Exige!

Well I've had my D90 for a few weeks now. Uber cool little camera. I miss the compactness of the D40 from time to time, but the 90 really does have much better metering and better color... The Auto WB is much more natural and the quick adjustments to add amber or blue into the auto WB is nice feature that the D40 didn't have. It also does VERY well in the upper ISOs when comapred to the D40. In that case, it's night and day better. ISO 800 on the 40 has similar grain to ISO 3200 on the D90

I find that I still rarely use Live View. Only time it has come in handy was doing some shots when I was placing the camera on an object in lieu of using a tripod and the camera was in a place where I could not get my down on the view finder. In that case, Live View was handy...

So great little camera all in all. Don't get me wrong, the 40 takes great shots, you jsut have to know your way around the camera a bit more to make sdjustments as its auto settings just aren't quite as "good" as the 90's... I find that I ahve to tinker less with setting on the 90 to get the shot I'm looking for... If anyone is thinking of buying themselves a SLR for X-mas, either camera is great, but the 90 is a big step ahead of where the 40 is.

Best,

Phil
