Sad. Many of the public icons from my youth are disappearing now. Sad indeed!

I used to love it when Howard Stern used to work in the same studio with him at NBC and mess with his stuff and then he would go nuts.

No, not really. I believe that those folks were better known in the N.E. local broadcast areas. Where I grew up, (Atlanta) the local cartoon host character was Officer Don (Kennedy). Bestoink Dooley (George Ellis) was another colorful character as the host of those horror movies that I craved to watch as a kid. As far as I know those four are all still with us.

Update: For those of you old Atlanta kids, I found that George Ellis (Bestoink Dooley) died in 1983 at age 64.

I worked with Soupy many times on game shows. Funniest guy off camera, period, end of story, he could have you laughing for hours. He never told the same story twice, he was gracious, easy to work with, just a truly great guy. Here's one great story that earned him a suspension

Go to your parents bedroom and get "funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. Presidents" from their pants and pocketbooks. "Put them in an envelope and mail them to me," Soupy instructed the children. "And I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico!" He was then hit with a pie.[10] Several days later, a chagrined Soupy announced that money (mostly Monopoly money[11]) was unexpectedly being received in the mail. He explained that he had been joking and announced that the contributions would be donated to charity. As parents' complaints increased, WNEW's management felt compelled to suspend Sales for two weeks

I never watched Soupy Sales but heard about his exploits.

Could someone explain the differences in personality between his dogs, Black Tooth and White Fang?

Wasn't the joke, "What's on top of a house?" Answer: "Ruff!".

Answer to your second question. Not a Soupy joke. Don't know if your serious about the 1st but here's the answer.

White Fang, "The Biggest and Meanest Dog in the USA," who appeared only as a giant white shaggy paw with black triangular felt "claws" jutting out from the corner of the screen. Fang spoke with unintelligible short grunts and growls, which Soupy repeated back in English, for comic effect. White Fang was often the pie thrower when Soupy's jokes bombed.
Black Tooth, "The Biggest and Sweetest Dog in the USA", also seen only as a giant black paw with white triangular felt (just the opposite of White Fang), and with more feminine, but similarly unintelligible, dialogue. Black Tooth's trademark was pulling Soupy off-camera to give loud and noisy kisses.
