One of the things that killed Packard (going back a few years, I know) was them coming out with a cheap model that "everyone" could afford. The marque lost its panache. I'm sure Ferrari will be fine, but still... Just my opinion, so please hold your accusations of "elitist", "snob", "silver spoon...", etc. , I'm just a working guy, not rich.

Some of you in the mid atlantic area will have heard of Mr. Tire. They are a tire retailer in the mid atlantic, and now have over 375 stores. The founder, who is also in commercial real estate and owns several shopping malls, told me his story of buying his 430. He was told flat out by the dealer he would be on a forever waiting list, not already being part of the Ferrari owner population. He needed to get intro by buying a used Ferrari, then be 'admitted' into the ranks of folks who would be permitted to actually buy a new Ferrari. Remember, this is a guy who's owned Vipers, Ford GT's...he can pay cash for anything he wants...but he could not buy a new Ferrari outright. He told me he wound up buying a used 360 from the dealer. He never saw the car, never took delivery of it, but bought it on paper, then as a Ferrari owner immediately traded it in on the 430. Never took possesion of the 360. I've no reason to disbelieve his story, in fact it validates others I've heard. If this new car is a 'cheaper' Ferrari, rest assured the first two or three year run will already be committed to existing Ferrari owners. The average 'poor' guy won't even get to sit in one. He does not see it as you or I do in terms of 'losing' money. He wanted a 430. He did the math, saw how much it would cost to get one. The alternative was to not get one. He got one, a very nice red one, with which he is happy, and he is content with his total investment in it. When you have more than ample resources, you evaluate 'deals' a bit differently. This is a man who, short of buying a private island in the caribean, can buy pretty much anything else he wants at whatever price makes sense to him. |

Yep, I still have one of those cheapy BMW's from the mid 90's. 318ti. What a great car. 180,000 miles, basically almost original everything, including exhaust, plug wires, alternator, etc etc and it still runs and looks great and passes emissions with flying colors.
