Study recommends total ban on military

A study comissioned by smokers has concluded that the military costs too much money and too many lives. It recommends a gradual phase out of the military over a 10 to 20 year period. Although smokers currently enjoy deeply discounted prices on tobacco at commissares and have traditionally been able to continue smoking while serving their country, that is expected to change over the same 10 to 20 year period. "It isn't just smokers who are affected by the military," a spokesman said, "Nonsmokers put their lives at risk, too. And wars kill a lot of people, sometimes innocent civilians, as history clearly shows. Cost savings alone more than justify the ban, but we are mostly concerned about saving lives. We are hoping that people from other countries, smokers and nonsmokers alike, join us in this effort to put an end to militaries and wars."

Two smokers sit in the mud next to their tank in this archive photo. They are putting their lives at risk every day and have to endure many other hardships, such as deployment overseas, long periods of separation from their families and friends, wearing drab clothing, unfashionable haircuts, and risk of infection with STDs.

Cute. Reminds me of that old joke: "my cousin smoked two packs a day and died a horrible death at age 42... he got run over by a bus."

Since I just read this on CNN, I'll throw out the article that inspired this...

the government has banned a lot of drugs less harmful than cigarettes... its a shame the tobacco industry has its fangs in the government and the American people

If nicotine came in syringes I wouldn't care but I have to breath that crap too and it pisses me off

I think the Op is trying to say ban military not smoking. Whats wrong with war, its in our nature. I'd rather die in battle than from putting tar in my lungs. Of course I'd rather wear pants than a dress but to each his own.

It was just an Onion-like joke. I'm trying to quit smoking - again - and am not in the military (but was 20+ years ago). I bought some Blu Cigs but they havn't arrived yet.

I think it is fine and dandy that the military has smoking cessation programs and should do whatever they can to help people quit, but they shouldn't take away another right. I think it would eat into recruitment numbers, too. What they should probably do is ban smoking in boot camp, that way people would be forced to quit for at least 8 weeks (or whatever it is). If they take up the habit again, it would probably be due to stress and/or boredom. Worse things happen.

Dude, I'm in the military. I don't see the humor. Many great, young Americans are giving their lives every day.

Well I went through about 8 years ago and we were definetely not allowed to smoke in basic let alone have enough time to take a ****, but that was the AF. My friend in the Army claimed to have more leniencies though. I prefer a 100% on my PT test so I don't smoke.

Uh, smoking has been banned in basic training for a LOOONG time. Are you kidding? When I was there we weren't even allowed junk food!

It was allowed when I was in boot camp, but that was a LOOOOONGER time ago... 1981.

Oh by the way - satire, yes. I'm sorry someone was offended. I have a very warped sense of humor, I guess.

As we say in the military, "If you can't take a joke, you shouldn't have joined!"

My civvy e-mail account is "Craigcigarman1" as I have 3 humidors full of duty-free Cubans from various deployments. BTW, I recently did so well on my annual Cdn Forces Expres Test (Physical Training Standard) that I am now exempt from doing it for 2 years.

That photo clearly illustrates that the whole "smoking area" thing has gotten way out of hand
