Top 50 Recession Proof Industries

When recessions hit , smart job-seekers begin to wonder which industries are strong enough to weather the storm and are recession-proof.

In theory, these industries will keep on growing and hiring people despite the hard times, making them a safe bet for job applicants.

Top 50 Recession-Proof Industries (And What Makes Them Recession-Proof) Part 1 | ResumeBear Blog

What number do you work in?

I work a mostly in #4 and #10

I am not in any of these.

I wonder why they think that turbines can't be manufatured elsewhere? I have a feeling that anything equipment or product manufacturing related in this list is suspect at best.

I guess the list was about recession proof industries and not necessarily ones that will stay in the US though.

I also love that school bus transportation is on this list...great, I guess if I lose my 6 figure income, I can always drive a bus...that is REALLY comforting!!

You're in big trouble buddy - I'd make a beeline for the DMV to take your School bus test if I were you!

Maybe - these things tend to be pretty general. On the other hand there are often some pretty high barriers to entry for capital equipment. I don't know too much about turbines, but in the water industry the testing/validation requirements are so strict that it's very hard for Asian manufacturers to get a foothold

........plus it's likely that congress will insist that most of Obama's money will have to be spent on US made stuff.

Interesting. Being in Design and having a flexible creative ability can land you in many if not most of these fields. Maybe not full time employment, but certainly potential contract work in a lot of those trades. Luckily I've still got a little left in schooling, and the ability to safely stay longer if I needed/wanted/had to. Might come out on the brighter side of all of this.

Surprised being a mortician or in the funeral business not in top 25. Regardless of the economy, when a family member dies, you have a dead body on your hands that you have to pay someone to handle.

A long time ago an old wise friend told me that the only "Industries" that are truly recession proof are Porn, Alcohol and Tobacco! Not saying I agree just what I heard

^^^ I heard something similar:

Cosmetics (women want to look good even if they don't feel good)
Alcohol (who knows they're being evicted if they're stone cold drunk during the process)
Tobacco (gotta get the nicotene high to feel better about an otherwise sh*tty life)

What about firearms dealers?

On the other hand, unless you start actively creating product, it's not much of a growth industry.

Turbines of the sort they are probably referring to can have significant lead times and significant capital investment. So, the job isn't likely to disappear simply because it takes so darn long.

Medicine. You will always have a job, whether or not you get paid is an entirely different thing though...

Cool, I guess I'm safe since I'm in #4. And I must say, are sales have gone up on some of our medical instruments in the past year. Looks like this recession hasn't hit us yet.

Guess it would depend on the criteria they chose to define industry.

BTW - thanks for your service. I recently retired from the Army having served 23-years.
