335mm brakes to big?

I am in the process of selling a car to give me some funds for a exige purchase hopefully next spring/summer. My car has AP Racing 335mm 4pot brakes & I wanted to keep them possibly to throw on a exige. Is this size of brake to overkill for this car which would see some track time? AP Racing stated for my car 18in rims are required however certain 17's could be fitted so more then likely I would have to at least step up to 17's up front.

I love the stopping power I have however my car weighs 600-800 lbs more then a exige.

thanks

If you want to preserve the handling with 17s up front, be prepared to limit the body roll considerably. The 50 series tires are relatively forgiving of being cambered, but if you start putting 40 or 35 series tires up front, they won't be. As for the brakes being too big, for NA they definitely are. The stock brakes are plenty good enough. If you are racing and have 300+ hp with a supercharger or turbo, the bigger brakes will be more appropriate.

Even with more horse power, up to a certain point the brake bias shifts to the front brakes. I would imagine the pistons for the 335mm brakes will do just that unless you also increase the piston sizing in the rear. Keep in mind that the sport brakes are only 308mm, I wouldn't venture much beyond that unless the piston sizing is the same or if you upsize the rear brakes along with the front to maintain balance.

thanks for the info.... I do plan on finding one that's already been messed with in the HP area so 300HP+ is definantly what I want.

I thought I read/saw a kit which relocates the OEM front brakes to the rear to help keep the bias proper.... I figure something like that would need to be done.

Are 17/18in wheel combo's OK on these cars?

thanks

As I said, if you don't mind playing suspension engineer, you can get the bigger wheels to work. Most people just throw them on for visual appeal, and don't know or care what happens to the handling. Also, be aware that strong, lightweight 17 & 18 inch wheels are very expensive. Putting heavy wheels on the car will also degrade the handling.
