Dealer just qouted me $1400 for new front brake pads and rotors!

What the hell?

I know that high prices are expected for service on this car but I feel like I'm getting raped. Worst thing is, I thought that I would feel when I needed new brakes but I had no warning except when I heard the scary sounds of bare metal screwing up the rotors.

I figure that's probably about $1000 in parts and I guess the other $400 is four hours of labor give or take?

What's the milage on your car? I check my brake pad thickness about once a month or so.

About 12000 miles. I guess I just have to be ready next time. I'll just be changing the brakes myself every 10000 miles or so, so this won't happen again.

Seems a bit premature . . .

Edit: I mean for rotor. I am at 7300 and just put new pads on. Still had life left in the olds but since I had it torn apart went ahead and did it.

Time to get a set of Ultradiscs and Porterfield pads. Just install it yourself .

$1400? Yep that sounds about right for the pads and rotors.

Right, $500 bucks in parts and if your in the La area, for a six pack I'll put them on for you and you have better/lighter weight aftermarket parts.

EBC rotors $230 a set + $120 pads and a hour labor= $350 so $1400@ the dealer sounds about right!! after all a $1100.00 profit for a hours work seems fair..DIY carl

Guess the thread is dead.

Same conclusion as always...dealerships always over charge for basic parts and service.

I had taken the car to the dealer because it wasn't driveable. I thought one of the calipers was stuck because it was making scratching noises even when I was driving. Anyway, I guess I'll just take it in the rear this time because this is my daily driver and can't afford to be without the car for a few days. BTW, this is in Miami.

after looking at the front assemblies on my '06 elise, they are from some standard auto product, else the hubs wouldn't be splined inside, etc.
i suspect that they may be toyota...
anyone hazard a guess?
next time i have the car up, i'll take a picture and get some info.
