Hoosier A3S04 tire pressures??

The Tire Rack is shipping a set of Hoosiers to me as we speak, to be mounted on new SSRs. I did a thread search, but found nothing definitive on tire pressures for these tires. It appears that in hot conditions Randy and Robert started in the low 40s and ended up at 46 lbs at one meet. Others suggested pressures much lower. Does anyone have any experience (other than the one meet in SD in August) in setting pressure?

Also, if I remember correctly, that meet was before we started removing shims to improve negative camber in the front. Any results from AFTER that?

Lastly, it will still be cool here (50-55 degrees?) when I run for the 1st time on them, March 19th or 20th. What does the effect of cold weather/pavement mean to Hoosiers in terms of pressure? Thanks for all your help. I will certainly post my results after the fact.

Tire care tips

Vehicle size: 1800-2200 lbs.
Recommended Hot Pressure: 39-42 psi
Cold Pressure: 30-36 psi

See the following information for the tires:

https://www.hoosiertire.com/rrtire.htm Go to tire information.

I found the information to be spot on. You need alot of pressure upfront to keep the outside edges from prematurely wearing. I have the R3S04 on my Z06 and run hot F- 46 psi and R- 39 psi. Very neutral and wear is fine. But I have -2 deg front camber and -1.5 rear. My information is with the R not the A though.

Give Jeff Spear at Hoosier a call. He knows his stuff.

Surferjer,
You lucky bugger. Man that is gonna stick!

It appears Cisitalia closed out this thread in one lick!

Please let us know how things work out with these tires. It looks like I may be selling the car that was holding me back from buying a towing vehicle and featherlite so I may be going the hoosier way sooner than I thought.

I feel lucky. Got a terrific trailer, and I'm looking forward to running this season with the proper shoes on my Elise. And I decided to splurge and get another set of SSRs so I can run the AO48s on SSRs during class time in April, then pull out the Hoosiers and switch for meets. At this point my equipment is far, far ahead of my abilities. Guess I better go to class and get lots of practice.

Hmmm, okay. no one else really commented on the weather aspect. At least with a trailer I can choose my weapon when I get there (AD07s ,AO48s, or Hoosiers). Yep, if it's raining I may go with the AD07s. I'm not sure they aren't a better tire for a rainy, slick track...

Edit: actually if there's enough time between runs, I could switch tires during the competition and see what works best. I could probably switch and retorque in 10 minutes. Might be fun to compare/contrast at cooler temps.

jer,

That is wise to have options and switch tires. A trailer opens many endless other opportunities. I have used the Hoosiers to great advantage on 50 degree days. I would still not hessitate to use them in 50 deg weather for a track day. They just take longer to warm up.

How do you autocross guys warm up your tires when you have a standing start? Electrical blanket warmers?

Some guys have tire warmers. I don't have any yet, and I've already spent a lot more than I probably should have. And a stiffer sway bar (why do they call it a track bar in NASCAR?) and Ohlins are higher on the priority list that tire warmers anyway.

Probably the most popular way to warm up tires is to have a co-driver. Maybe I'll snag my son from college for the weekend. Otherwise you just go cold and hope for the best.

Jer, I think a track bar and an anti-sway bar are two different things. I'm pretty sure a track bar is a lateral axle location device.

Re getting heat in the tires, you pretty much live with no grip on your first run. I think I might worry about switching tires mid race for that reason, but I'm not an expert.

You might be right, Chris, on the bar.

On the tires that makes sense. I'm exchanging emails with Jeff Speer at Hoosier Tires right now on pressures.

I do not believe tire warmers, except co-drivers, are allowed under SCCA SOLO Rules. Disregard this info if another group is putting on the event and check their rules. Also all the tire warmers I am aware of are extremely Expensive. One thing on a Sunny Day Keep your tires in the sun and if possibile turn the car to heat both sides evenly.

Agreed that active tire warmers are illegal... but passive tire warmers (see blackwatchracing.com ) are legal... but will not help before that first run. Unless you get creative and store them in that motorhome with the heater set on 120 degrees.

If anyone is looking to buy Hoosiers... and can wait a little bit, I would suggest waiting until April for the new model AS305s.

A new Hoosier eh, interesting. Seems like the A3S04 just came out. I wonder if this means soon we could get A3S04's for real cheap like last summer with the A3S03's.
Also passive tire warmers dont help if your region does not run in heats. All of our local regions do a run-work-run-work type thing so the runs are like 45 minutes apart minumum.

45 min spaced runs would really be something I hated.

I think Hoosier recognizes that the V710s are kicking their butt and they dropped the ball with a less than stellar tire this year. They have to get the next tires into the SCCA's hands in April for legality compliance for 2005.

Which reminds me, I hear the V710s for the rear of the Elise may be here soon also. Assuming they fit.

I'll have to suffer with the current Hoosier until I wear them out. Might last all season I suppose. Heck, maybe I should use them for the autoX school after all.

The A3S04s love the cold. They overheat and get greasy easily, sort of like a popular "street" tire we all know.

When the A3S04s came out, I loved the grip. Then I hated the premature edge wear. Now that the V710s have come out, I don't care anymore!

John-how many runs did you get before cording? I've heard from 30 to 60. That's a wide range. Just trying to plan when I'll have to toss these and get Kumhos.

One thing you can also do to help the front outter edge wear is set the front caster as high as it will go. The caster gives increased neg camber on the outside wheel when the front wheels are turned.

Tirerack lists a 245/45-17 being available in about a month. Are you referring to that or some other size they have planned.

It is available as of this week. Stay tuned for a fitment test. Maybe within 24 hours. Or sooner.

With non-maxed front camber... we had 20 runs before cording the front outside edges. With maxed out neg camber, we got over 30.

A lot depends on your driving style and the surface you run on. It can easily change that number by a large factor.
