New Volk TE37s vs. re-finished SSRs

Greetings everyone,

As I work through my winter projects (FF header, S111 Flash2, black powder-coating the front calipers, smoking tail lights and side markers, Exige seats, if I can find a set, and possibly a set of Ohlins), I am trying to figure out what my next wheel move is. Allow me to add, before we go any further, that I have a wheel fetish / problem. I love 'em. I love trying different kinds (I had five sets of wheels / tires for my S4 for use throughout the year: summer, track, all-season, snow and ice. You know, the right tool for the job?). So, I am kicking around the idea of a set of black TE37s in LSS sizes (I've got stock size R888s en route!) vs. re-finishing my silver / polished lip SSRs that are on the car right now (which are my track wheels. Street wheels are black LSS).

First things first, I need to source the TE37s. Tirerack doesn't have any at the moment (besides, they only have grey, which I don't want) and I am waiting to hear back from BWR. Assuming I can source them, I'd probably go with them as I love the look.

If I can't find them, I'll keep the SSRs, but I'll probably powder-coat them black (30% gloss).

So whaddaya think...
1) New TE37s or re-finished SSRs?
2) If re-finished SSRs... all black or black and retain the polished lip?
3) Finally, I assume the SSR center-caps (which I've never installed) should match the lip (i.e. black / black or silver / silver)? I'm not going to use them, but the wheels will be sold sooner or later (sooner) to make room for their successors.

My car is GG w/ matt silver stripes as per the attached pic...

Just got my TE37s last week, in 16x7 and 17x8, but I ordered them in Sept 07. I looked everywhere, but the only option was special ordering and waiting for overseas shipment (2 month shipping).

PM me if you need more info.

I personally love the look of your silver SSR. Why paint it?

black wheels, to me, look like wheels meant to be covered by hubcaps - you cant' see any detail, they're usually dirty, and you can't tell where wheel stops and tire starts. If you paint 'em, maybe gunmetal or some other finish that's interesting to look at.

Hey, you asked for the opinion.

flat black SSRs - all of it, no p-lip.

what are the widths of the SSRs anyway? 7" front, 8" rear?

Thanks for the inputs and pics! Couple thoughts...

In terms of "why paint them?" Mostly because I'm looking for a change / something different. Anyone have a pic of an all flat-black / semi-gloss (i.e. black lip) SSR on a Lotus?

I hear you on the lack of detail, in pictures anyway, on black wheels. However, the look just speaks to me I guess and I think they look rather purposeful, esp. live and in-person. Also, love the look of grey wheels on a red or black car, but for some reason grey on grey may be just a bit too much, you know... grey. I suppose I should search out more pics of the wheels I think I want mounted on GG cars.

Hmmmm, perhaps I should paint the wheels matt grey to match the stripes on the car? Although that probably won't be much different than the silver they are now(?).

These particular SSR are in the stock LSS sizes.

OMG, I LOVE those Cup wheels and would happily get a set of silver or pref black, but ~$2,200 bucks feels right for a set of 16/17" wheels. I'm not feelin' the $3,000+. Still though, those are gorgeous. I wish the SSR GT2 had been more readily available for us.

Jack, did you know there was an alien little robot holding on for its dear life while you were on track?

Yeah....it's my new secret weapon to assist me in passing cars on track. No point-by and they get a laser shot.

Being an OLD fart, I need all the help that I can get.

Talking about wheels... what's the story on the TRMotorsport F1 wheels that Tire Rack carries?

/I vote to keep the SSRs unpainted.

Frank,

First time I've seen a picture of your car - it is nearly identical to mine (GG with matte silver stripes). My LSS wheels are painted semi-flat, here's a picture to give you an idea of how your SSRs may look.

Lotus Sport > Volks > SSR IMHO,

There's a GG ExigeS owner LBC111 here in SoCal that has the Volks powdered black. I thought his car looked awesome.
