Painting the wheels

Has anyone tried using a can of ordinary gloss black spray paint on their wheels? Would you have to prime them first? How would it look compared to powder coating? How would it last compared to powder coating?

And now for your entertainment, here's a sheep jumping rope:

Powder Coat if you can

From my understanding when I visited the Powder Coat company that is doind my wheels, he informed me that with Powder Coating, you get the gloss and UV protection on the wheels, plus they are going to dip it in clear coat to help protect the wheel from additional debris and outside forces.

All this for $35 per wheel. Good deal if you ask me...I haven't heard to much on painting and how it will withstand the elements...

Mick,
I haven't painted / coated the Elise wheels (or other aluminum wheels), but know from experience with steel wheels that powder coating will be MUCH superior to painting as far as durability, resistance to chipping, fade-resistance, etc, since the coating is a baked-on epoxy or urethane. You can count on a spray-can finish chipping and flaking off, even if the wheels are scuffed / primed. They might look all right for a while, but will definitely need touch ups frequently. And when the time comes to mount new tires, you could expect scratches from the mounting machine. Powder coating is much more durable and protective, if you find a decent shop for the application.

powder vs. paint

Make sure you have the powder coating done by a reputable/competent shop. It's only as good as the surface preparation. I've had powder coated wheels (new) flake and corrode. I have a hydraulic lift that came powder coated "...for a long-lasting, durable finish." and half of it has flaked off. A good quality paint job, especially with a good clear coat, matte (dull) or gloss over it will last a long time. Again, surface prep and application by an experienced painter is vital.
