Added a Little Bling

I've never striped a car or painted the wheels before, but I guess if you're gonna have a car like this, you might as well have fun with it. I wanted something that "popped", so I went with yellow. (Considered black or silver, but they didn't pop on the BRP. White was cool, but keeping wheels white would be a nightmare.)

As soon as I had it done, people started asking if I'm a Redskins fan. That didn't even occur to me. Heck, if I know Dan Snyder, he'll have his lawyers hounding me for royalties!

BTW: my camera just won't show the true yellow -- it's a rich, deep yellow. You may have seen it on a NFB car posted here a while back.

BTW: striping was by John at Autuko in Richmond (804/641-6408) -- he did an outstanding job. (Thanks to Maxxfish for putting me on to him.) Wheels were by the Wheel Doctor (Dan) in Gaithersburg, MD, who also did a great job.

Neil,

Actually I am planning on doing stripes on my Bordeaux too, but I want to go with a medium silver color.

I've done clear bras and tine before so I think I can do it myself. Does anyone have a good source for vinyl stripes? I was thinking of going with this place:

http://www.edecals.com/Flags/stripes_color.htm

Also, can you measure the width of your stripes and post it? I'm debating whether to go with 6", 7", or some other width. Your stripes look about right to me, so I'd like to use yours as a point of reference.

Thanks for posting. It does look like a Redskins fan!

So mean...

It sure is controversial, but I think it looks really cool! I admire your courage to try out new things.

Now, don't hold back -- tell me what you REALLY think.

Yeah, I expected this wouldn't be everyone's "cup of tea", but I wanted something really different. I guess I achieved my goal!

As for stripe width, it's 8 inches each (and I think roughly 5 inches between). But it's a bear of a job -- I watched it being done, and I can tell you that I really don't know how he made the tape do what it did. The rear of the trunk lid has a particularly nasty spot on each side that I thought could never be done -- that part alone took about 30 minutes for each side.

For the record, the red one is not a Lotus 23. It a Xanthos 23 - a nice replica, but the huge windshield is to meet the rules to make it street legal. A real Lotus 23 had a very short Plexiglas windshield. I still kicking myself for letting one go - I needed the $5,000 back in '79 for a house down payment.

Many of the Lotus race cars back then had yellow painted wobbly web wheels...

You ain't kidding. In the 45 minute ride home from picking up the car, they were already filthy.

Hey, who here wants to volunteer for the honor of cleaning them for me daily???

Each to their own but with all due respect, the way you've done those wheels, you've managed to make that car look ****e. Could someone with photoshop experience maken them black/silver/burgundy to see how they look? yellow wheels on that car? looks like plastic. in fact, looks like a lego set.

Yeah, I did think the wheels make it kind of toy-like, but I actually liked that. This car is one big toy. Just having fun with it -- besides, nothing's permanent in this world except death. (And some people would debate THAT.)

Oh, and thanks JWA! I need all the support I can get -- this is a TOUGH crowd!

This is a tough crowd. Jeesh guys - lighten up. I can't believe that these are the same guys who all thought that the rhino-liner covered Elise looked fine.

To tell you the truth I'm not a fan of BRP - I just generally don't like dark red/maroon on sports cars - but like that it is awesome. It is a toy, and you might as well have fun with it. I really liked the Ardent Red Elise that HRM did with the yellow stripes and wheels, and yours is even better.

I showed the pictures to my wife, a former fashion model, professional graphic designer, and the hands-down most stylish person that I've ever known, and she thinks that it is great. So there you go. The rest of the guys all love it too, they're just bummed that they don't have the cajones to pull it off themselves.
