Hmmm,
15 hours * $80/hr = $1,200
Material cost = $400 (?)
Shipping to and fro = $500 (?)

Grand total = $2,100

Is that too cheap/expensive?

New clam is about $1,800.00 plus shipping.
You figure it out!

New clam is ~$2100.00

For me, there is no shipping for fixing my clam, but there is for a new clam.

Materials were actually around $100.00. Still needs paint and film. I am guessing my actual costs are about $1000. Was it a good move financially? As I mentioned a lot earlier in this thread, if I had known how much damage there was, I would not have done this. Buying a new clam made more sense. But I had already started. So... if we are spending this much effort/money, why not end up with a better than new clam? An UberClam?

When we are done, this will be (to me) worth more than a new clam.

Randy, with the investment, it might be work giving a few moments to the question "How will I treat my uber-clam better than before?"

I think some lifestyle changes may be in order here.

I think this is a terrific project and the car will be unique and not "ruined" or whatever. It will also save money over time as the thing will break cones and not itself in the future. Maybe it can even take a truck tread laying on the highway now! Not to mention making it up driveways, trailers, and ramps more easily. In the mean time there will be pride and satisfaction at a job well done and less nervousness around the cones = peace of mind.

Kudos in advance!

Randy
you might try and get some sticker vinal and use that for the temp color. it would look a hell of a lot better than the pokemon cars we have down here running ****ty primer body kits

I have a lot of experience matching paint on fiberglass, mostly on boats. Even if you get factory paint doesn't guarantee a match. If it is urethane, you have to consider how the catalyst and other additives will affect the color. Is there metallic in the paint? Or is it sprayed on after the color and then clear-coated? Yellow is not the easiest color to match.

Good luck with coloring the UBERCLAM.

Work is continuing on the UberClam. Though a bit slower...

You can see the shape is done. What we have decided to do, is to build up on the inside of the clam, a layer of foam that will be ecapsulated by carbon/kevlar and resin. It should be like a bullet proof surfboard.

Car getting jacked up in rear soon for the rear track brace-

Test fitting foamed clam on the car...

Note driveway area was wetted down and washed for the foam particles.

It's all coming together very nicely...the new lines look great on the chassis when taken as a whole.

lol... no, a nice local guy.

Some updates. The clam is now completely foamed in the front, at least 1" thick almost everywhere.

Reminds me of a bat ray

Project looks great!

LOL @ the SLR, good stuff.

You should have moulded some death race spikes on the front. Give a whole new meaning to "taking cones with you".
