Death Race 2000, good call! Looks like it has The Stig in it sans helmet...

Someone said it needed spikes?

The screws are temporary. This is being done to hold in the nuts that are being molded in place. These nuts will allow me to bolt on various things like skidplates and splitters.

Shaping the foam became more work than anticipated and was completed about 11:00pm. Then the glassing and resin started. Bill worked until 3:30am and then started again at 6:30am.

The clock is ticking. The hope was that the clam could be finished enough to put the car back together for the autocross in LA this weekend. It is looking a bit questionable, but Bill is trying. I have my part in this too. I make him coffee and offer criticisms.

Not really easy to see in this pic, but the cheek area has been sealed with a colored resin. The rest of the foam sections of the nose have also had the first layers of a fine mesh fiberglass cloth laid on the sections and then resin applied.

Did you do away the two little lips and the license plate mount space on purpose? Can now the Exige front lip fit on it?

By the way, why don't you ask him to recess the front emblem while he's at it... like the ones on the Exige.

We did do away with them on purpose. I don't know if an Exige splitter would fit. I know our own custom one will.

P.S. I can't ask him to recess the badge or fill the seam. He is a bit edgy right now.

Maybe next week.

Elise having plastic surgery. She will now have a unique smile.

Very cool!

PS Hope that Lotus is listening in for future clam improvements

Well the new Elise cars in 2007 are supposed to have federally compliant (no pun intended) bumpers. But I do think (not sure) that a separate molded wall that was inserted behind the front of the clam and then the cavity filled with foam, would have made the clam a lot stronger at minimal cost and weight.

Sadly, UberClam is now going on hold. We tried to get er done by Friday night and that plan has fallen by the wayside. We will go back to work on it next Monday after Bill is getting done racing up in Los Angeles. I am cancelling my racing (well, I don't have a car... and I need to finish up some details on the PDR development/build) and deal with some server issues...and a few other things.

Still to be done:

More glass on the front cheeks. Glass the inside. Carbon-Kevlar sheets on bottom. Create rub strips (cut, drill, countersink, bevel leading edge).

Electrical work to be done: ABS bypass switch and fuse. Stebel Horn wiring. Final fit and adjust Lotus driving lights. Run video cable into dash. Add CAT5 cable through grommet for future stuff.

Mechanical work: Mororo oil pan. Gauge bracket install. Lotus rear track brace install. Oil pressure and temp guage. Clock. Traction control harness.

It is probably no small coincidence that Bill (the guy shaping the clam) is a Miata nut and owns a 99 Miata. Damn him!!!

In fact

The blue car nose to the right? His Miata waiting for a custom spoiler.

We put the project aside due to the weather and work. Now we are picking it back up again. But we are busy dealing with outfitting the SLR for Gumball.

Work returns on the clam itself on Friday.

Today we worked on the Moroso oil pan and the Lotus rear track brace, and also a little bit of the wiring/electrical stuff that I wanted to do. More to come...
