How to remove AC surround?!

Hey! I have always wanted to remove the AC surround and paint it mat black to match the interior, but i could never fidn a thread that teaches how to remove the surround.

Do i need to sand it before painting?

I believe this must have been talked about but couldnt find the threat

please shoot me your knowledge or even your 0.02

It's very easy to remove. There are two screws underneath the "oddments tray"/shelf. Remove them, and then the bottom support can be moved enough to allow the tabs on the top to be freed.

You don't need to sand it if you are painting it black, you'll smooth off the texture on the plastic if you do. I made the mistake on a part of my center console and it looks too smooth with the black paint.

Just it with some Krylon plastic.

If it is loose enough, it can be just slid out without removing the screws, after depressing the two top tabs. The screws just hold the runner support bracket.

New black surround is approx. $15 from Lotus.

I just replaced the surround with a new matte black one from Lotus. I was in the area of $15 and has a nice dull rubberized black coating. I intended to paint mine until I saw the cost.

You do not have to undo the screws under the tray. Just use a flat, thin object to depress the tabs on top of the surround and then pull it back. Mine was a tight fit and a very little bit of side to side pressure should get it out, be careful though, it is plastic on plastic. w
