Layering paint film??
Hey everybody,
I was cleaning the rocker panels today -- surprise -- the Sharshield is really peppered. Considering that the car doesn't have that many miles on it, I wanted to do something before the rocks eat through to the paint. Has anybody simply taken a piece of film and installed it over the Lotus-applied film? Would this look crappy if the first layer of film is already pitted? I kinda like the idea of super-thick paint film just in front of the rear wheels. I did a search on this, but couldn't find anything on this specific question... Thanks for any help.

If the existing film is pitted or chewed up, the second layer of film would likely not lay down smoothly and without air bubbles, which would magnify the effect. I wouldn't recommend it.
StarShield uses 6 mil film for all pieces on the car. 3M also makes that same film in a 12 mil thickness which should be ideal for the heavier impact areas that do not have difficult compound curves. I was going to have the 6mil 3M film applied everywhere except the rocker panels and use the 12 mil film there. In the end I opted to go with 8 mil Venture film everywhere. |
