Lotus Elise Front spoiler guard

While getting the Stage II Exhaust installed at Lotus Newport Beach David Simkin Field Service Engineer of Lotus Cars USA was on hand. He told me about a Lotus product to protect the lower front spoiler (?) of the Elise. As I interpret it, it would slip over the lower front spoiler and protect the body. There will be a left and a right part.

David gave the Lotus part number to Eric in parts over there at Newport Lotus and told me they should have them around the end of January 2005.

I can't say enough good things about the staff at Lotus Newport Beach. It will be the only Lotus dealer service my car will have. And the God send of meeting David Simkin of Lotus Cars USA.

All of this and I get to drive it! Sure beats my last Birthday where my wife bought me dinning room chairs.

Dana

Been interested to see how these look finally. Hopefully someone throws a picture up soon.

Are you going on the Palm Springs drive?

Anyone here know what this part number is? It would make it easier to try to order it from my less-informed dealer.

Ground Loop. I'll bribe Eric with donuts and try to get the part #.

SEM Protex

I don't know anything about a Lotus "spoiler guard" part, but inspired by MeanTT I had SEM Protex applied to the front lip of my car. It's like Rhino lining except it's tintable. I had it colored to match the blue stripes on my car. For $200 to $300 installed, it's a good-looking solution to the front scrape menace.

i just got my car two days ago and the stage 2 sounds nice.
i dont think it sounds as nice as a mustang's exhaust but as far as a 4 cylinder car....i dont think i've heard a nicer exhaust tone. It was audible when cruising and agressive when accelerating.

I just picked up a set from Eric today. Next step.....get them painted. I will paint the center console at the same time.......I wish that Shinoo would get the short shift kit in so that I can do this all at the same time.

Do they seem like they'll do the job? What are they asking for them?

Yes, they seem like they will do the job........my clam is almost worn through on the drivers side from scraping in/out of my driveway. What are they asking? $123.48/pair. Seems really high for what they are(high price 'cause the sales volume is low), but much cheaper than destroying my Elise's clam.

My 1993 RX-7 had a front spoiler that came in two parts too - nothing special, just two pieces of molded plastic. Couldn't have cost more than a few bucks to produce. Everytime I damaged one side or the other they charged me $332. $664 for the full set. And this was in 1993. So $123.48/pair seems like a bargain to me.

I hope these are easily removable. (i.e. 5 min. work to remove them, or at least capable of being removed on a regular basis.) If so, even as they get battered, they can be repaired and repainted regularly with relative ease, as long as they don't shatter or become structurally unsound. Fixing the spoiler is a lot tougher...

I tried ordering a set. Apparently while the guard itself is available, the parts for installing it to the car aren't so Lotus isn't shipping them out. Maybe next week.

A different idea...

Hey everybody,

My driveway apron is kinda steep, so in an effort minimze the chance of scraping I came up with this idea. Sort of a play on the curb-feeler idea - if the wire scrapes the pavement, hopefully you hear/feel it BEFORE the clam scrapes the ground.

I used 18 gage galvanized steel wire - a couple of bucks at the home improvement center. Using the two outer bolts under the front of the clam, I secured a 1-foot length of wire to each. I only backed out the bolts enough to allow the wire to wrap around, in case the nut inside the clam was loose. I bent the wire to allow for plenty of warning, yet not crunch up into the underside of the clam if hit. My install could have been much neater, but even with this sloppy job the impact on the outward appearance is minimal. My photos make the wire look much more noticable than it really is. The install is so quick and easy that you could install or remove these as the need arises.

These might allow you to test a dip/bump slowly without tearing up whatever you have protecting the bottom of the clam. If anybody has ideas to improve this, please share with the class...
