TimMullen - you are right !
I learned something today thanks, after checking with the local Lotus guys the Toyota instrument pack has as Tim says, digtal feed so ya can't get the tacho signal from this. The fused igntion power and earth can come from this but you would have to run a single wire back to the ECU and pick up one of the ECU spark plug wires that fires the coil. I'll hunt down a wire diagram and mark up the best place to take this from. Tim you able to email me the relevant pages ? The designer of the unit put the following picture togther to help with other systems. Jim's unit might be a good way of getting that signal back to the cockpit for other uses - datalogging units & shift-I of course. Sorry for the confusion in the first post guys.

ooops forgot - you can download the shift-I units different shapes in 1:1 scale from the website so you can see if it will fit.
Go to the installtion page to download the two different shapes - curved & straight. Cheers Dean

I would get used to the sound of the motor. A really good driver would know when to shift by the sound and timing.

I must be a bad driver. I drag raced for years with no tach. Running on a road course is a little more "busy". I like to short shift to save wear and tear. |

Is that why all of the: F1 drivers , V8 super cars, Kart & Rally car drivers and most of the Nascar are fitting with LED shifts lights...........mmmm can't be really good drivers then ? You should try driving an engine that has the same sound in rev's through the upper part of the range and has a very linear power delivery and see how you get on racing on a track when it's "busy"..........I thought I never hit the limiter until I datalogged a race and found I was regularly bouncing off it....not good for the engine at all......

Greetings from Scotland. I had been thinking about fitting the Shift-I to my Exige and stumbled on this thread. Just wondering if any of you have succesfully installed one yet - I'd be particularly interested to see where/how you connected the wire in the engine bay to pick up the RPM signal.

Mark - assume from the picture your Toyota powered ?
If so you will have to pick up a signal from the engine bay as per the wiring suggestions above, power and earth should be sourced from the stack unit. I'm trying to find a wiring diagram for the toyota powerd cars so I can put some instruction together. Anyone got a PDf or similar of the S2 toyota powerd service manaula with the wiring instructions ?? ![]()

Installed!
I took the day off yesterday and installed the shift-I light. VERY COOL!
I used the MSD tach signal pick-up mentioned in this thread. I purchased the straight based shift light setup with the green, yellow, and red lights. This little gadget has a ton of interesting options and is surprisingly easy to use. I have to say that installation is a bit difficult since our cars aren't the most friendly in the world for routing wires without chinese fingers and a quadruple jointed spine One has to pull the signal wiring from a plug coil all the way to the dash where the light is installed. Plus, I had to pull the radio and tap into the switched hot wire to turn the system on with the key. I ended up running the wires from the switched radio power inside the dash behind the speedo, which kept the install clean. I pulled the tach signal wire through the shifter cable access hole, up the spine and then up through a hole under the dash where the steering column goes through the bulk head. All the wires met up behind the light switches. I then fed the three very thin wires through the dash and laid them at the base of the windshield to the point where I mounted the shift light. I velcroed the light (you can't see the velcro) in the indention for the defrost vent in the center of the dash near the base of the windshield. I found this to be a great spot since the light is always in my peripheral while watching the road. It also looks -almost- factory in that location and the arch of the light follows the arches of the dash quite well from both in and outside of the car. At almost $200 for the whole project, I think it is well worth it Best, Phil

Yes...with a bit more work. I believe you need a rpm switch with those... So you would need the mentioned MSD sensor and then a switch and associated rpm plugs to trigger the light. That's how most of the non-adjustable lights like your work anyway...
The Shift-I light has all the nec. software and hardware internally except the tach signal pick-up. It's fully adjustable and I would presume a better route to go than a traditional light. IMO... Best, Phil Quote:

Here's a couple Bad pics
I know the lighting isn't great, but this will give the basic idea of where I mounted it. I figure everyone knows how to get wires routed so, just the final product here...
BTW- the weight of this upgrade is virtually zero ![]() Best, Phil
