Buz, last weekend I took a road trip up to Dallas in 104 degree heat, but I didn't have quite as good luck as you did. My car, with the repositioned AC sensor, froze up every 50 miles. I'm going to try the Wattwood Air Vent Enlargement Mod http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/show...8&postcount=87 before this weekend's road trip. I also suspect that some of the backroads I drove may have repositioned my AC sensor too.

Saw this old thread and thought I would check the position of the temperature probe after experiencing no cold air after about 30 minutes. I was actually happy to see the probe was about 1/2" from the evaporator fins as shown in the photo. I repositioned the probe and am now waiting for the opportunity to take an extended drive to test it. Within this thread I have noticed that by doing this procedure, some have had success and other not, I don't understand why it is not consistant. Another interesting point is that in a home A/C system there should be a differential of about 18' between the room and duct temperature. On my car, it was 55' duct and 80' air temperature, a 25' differential, I don't know if this is normal for a vehicle.

1) Insulate the cockpit from Solar (3M Crystalline Tint) & Convected (insulate sills) heat.
2) Replace evaporator thermostat with an upgraded electronic version to prevent freeze up.
3) Increase airflow into cockpit by removing both driver & passenger side footwell intake panels & blocking 2 outside air intakes in nose.

Just noticed this thread. The A/C in my 2005 Elise was average. The A/C in my 2006 Exige is much, much better. Does anyone know if Lotus changed anything about the A/C after model year 2005? Does anyone else who has owned multiple Lotus noticed a difference?

My 06 evaporator freezes up after about 30 minutes of use.

Did you reposition the probe?

Was checked by the tech and deemed to be in the proper position. I guess the probe/thermocouple could be bad?

My friend has over 30,000 miles on his car and uses the car as a daily driver and has the air on every day since he keeps the hardtop on most of the time with the windows closed since he needs to talk to people on his phone when commuting and cant hear with the roof off and the windows down. So he must have the most total use of air conditioning by an Elise owner.

At first when he got the car, it didnt work to good, so he had the probe relocated about 2 years ago after I told him it made mine work better. Then about a month ago it went out completely and they put coloring in to check for leaks. It seems like they changed fitting on the A/c lines and the newer cars have updated ones. Our cars are 05 models, so I dont know when it was changed.

The fitting was leaking. Since it goes through the siderails of the car it was a pain to fix. It took them 10 days to get everything redone, and it included a new compressor and a bunch of other stuff. I havent seen his repair order to get the new part number for the fittings or the parts that were fixed.

He called me the other day and said that the a/c went out again after having all the work done. Hopefully it is just a freon leak.

TonyM, it is likely the a/c relay. Lotus replaced mine under warranty.

My AC has never worked that well and has now completely stopped working. Much like xxxotic has mentioned above, they have placed dye in the car to locate the leak. Seeing that it is an 05, I'm disheartened to hear that it may take up to 10 days to fix!

xxxotic, any further news/details on your friend's AC issues? I haven't taken mine back to the dealer yet, but plan to later this month.

The AC in my old '05 Elise never worked. The AC in my '07 Exige works fine.

Mine works fine most of the time... this past weekend I took a trip to Orlando to visit some friends (2-1/2 HR trip) and about 3/4 of the way up the fan cut out??? You could barely feel cold come'n through the vents, though not enough to keep the cabin from get'n blazingly hot. I shut the a/c off for about 15-30 minutes and turned it back on and it worked fine. Same thing happened again on the way back. Anyone know why???

It hasn't gotten warmer than 85 degrees in Austin yet but so far the AC in my 06 Exige has been very cool. I'll get back when it hits 95-100.

Sounds as if your evaporator is freezing up on long trips and blocking airflow into the cabin. Search for threads on thermocouple sensor location. You may be able to keep it from doing this by not using the recirculate button, but the efficiency will not be as good either. Also, if you are not using the highest fan speed it is more likely to freeze up.

Chassis 30956, a 2006 Elise. Tried it first time on a couple hour drive from Palm Springs (110) to the beach. After about 75 minutes, the compressor froze, I assume, as there was almost no airflow. Oddly, it might have been because it was blowing so cold when I was leaving the desert, I was running a low fan speed. I guess I should have just cut the temp down and kept the fan speed up.

Where does the condensate drain out? It looked like under my passenger door.
