Polycarbonate Shield for Rear Window. Last Call

Hello all,

Update June 12th 2009. I will be running a new batch. They will be laser cut with smoother edges. Poly Carb has gone up a bit and so has postage. New price is $69.00 shipped to continental USA. Extra for shipping elsewhere.

Please either PM me or send an email to tony *at sign* my website is below.

Update June 15, 2008 Someone else just broke a window with a stone and he ordered one. I have 3 left but will make more if there is demand. Let me know.

UPdate. July 13, 2007 I have 8 of these left. If I ever do another run, it will only be after at least 15preorders. If you want one...let me know. First come gets what is left.

May 10, 2007 Hello all again. If anybody else wants one of these, I just placed a second order. Will have them in about 10 days. You can send a check or Paypal. Send me an email at the address below.

I have priced up a polycarbonate shield for the rear window. I dont have any pictures yet. A bunch of us on this thread:

Rear Window Inner Lexan Mod.. - LotusTalk - The Lotus Cars Community

Put together some specs and I had it priced out. 1/8 inch thick and held on with 6 suction cups.

If anyone is interested in buying one, $49 including shipping anywhere in the 48 states. Anywhere else, just whatever the shipping is extra.

Email me at tvacc at lotusowners.com. I will reply with payment instructions. I need to get at least 20 orders.

This can't be very common. I know I've heard of a few people here, but seriously? I have over 21,000 miles- plenty of top off driving, and can't recall ever getting hit with anything (other than rain) or a rock coming in and hitting the rear window. Maybe we should all put nets over our windows too, since on our last mountain drives one of our participants killed a bird on his seat/shoulder.

I agree that it is not that common. The problem as I see it is that it is so expensive to replace and takes such a large amount of time...why not.

And for me...I would have to drive 4-5 hours..stay overnight. It is just not worth it.

I am not trying to SELL this. This is just MY rational.

If I get 10 more orders, I will finish up the final template tonight. Take it to the plastics guy. He told me about a week.

I still have to find a place for the suction cups..

In 11k miles I don't have the top on often. Have been hit in the face and glasses /sunglasses a few times. The rear window has several little chips in it. Have added a rear window tint and been a lot more careful about keeping my distance and the film has picked up several nicks. Back road drives can be like that- wrost when you do it with another Elise. So to save it from getting blasted or having that one big one come over and take it out, for a few bucks am fine with this, with suction cups it's easy to put in or out.

tvacc- Question on the tint and suction cup. Know when I've mounted my chase cam using one big suction cup it doesn't hold up on the tint. Have another mount with 3 suction cups that work fine. Any way for you to double check or you or anyone else how well this will do on a tinted window?

Edit- Guess you better put me down as a maybe for now.

Check a craft store. They make suction cups with a "knob" on the end. You drill the proper sized hole and the knob snaps in. The suction cups are common for window decorations, etc. Last time I noticed them, they had a big bin with the cups in them for a quarter a piece.

They also make them with a wire hook on the knob so you can hang things on them. Just pry off the hook, and you have the one described above. I've even seen those suction cup hooks at Wal-Mart...

thanks..I will give them a try.

Give me your thoughts on this

Somebody suggested the suction cups like the first set. I thought about doing it the second way after finishing up the template tonight.

I'm doing something like this right now and it keeps the view out the back completely unobstructed and makes the whole piece less noticeable from the exterior.

Ok all...how about the cups like this:

------0--------0-----
|...........................|
|...........................|
0---------0---------0

I have the template done. Let me know what you all think about this cup setup. I am not sure we need the ones on the top ends.

I'm in with either suction cup setup above, but I prefer the latter. I can always add the other two if I want later.

BTW, the broken rear windows seem very common to me. I've heard more reports of broken rear windows than windshields. A broken rear window shatters, requiring immediate attention, and is a royal pain to repair.

I have a shield in place now and don't even notice it. That's substantial peace of mind considering I already have a huge rock chip right on the bottom edge of my "hoop cover."

You could always yank the suction cups and add some small pieces of velcro to the same locations. I'm using velcro now and it works great. I assume that would hold to tint quite well.

Hello all.

Still need 7 more orders to run this shield. I am going to put holes for the suction cups on the bottom corners...bottom center....and half way between the end and the center on top. I will provide two extra suction cups if someone feels the need to put them in the top corners...but I wil not drill holes there. Unless you guys want me to...

If any one wants one of these...let me know.
